13.5.2026 | The proposed amendments will accelerate the development of the nature values market in Finland and promote the steering of private funding to improving the state of nature. The amendments would enter into force in August 2026.

19.1.2024 | The European Commission published the conclusions of the assessment of the need for protection of the wolf population in December. The Commission proposes that the conservation status should be downgraded. Finland will bring this matter to the Agriculture and Fisheries Council on 23 January.

28.11.2025 | Finnish Biodiversity Award 2023–2024 was given to an actor that had done something inspiring to halt biodiversity loss. The winner of the competition was Crowdsorsa mobile game that has already helped fight against invasive alien species in Finland on a total of 4 million square metres. Honourable mentions were awarded to the cities of Kauniainen and Vantaa. The prizes were awarded by Minister of Climate and the Environment Sari Multala.

28.6.2019 | A draft of the updated Management Plan for the Wolf Population has been sent out for comments. The management plan is intended as a tool for managing the Finnish wolf population and wolf-related conflicts and an important means for implementing wolf policy. The plan also fulfils Finland’s international obligations concerning the protection of species. Comments on the draft will be accepted until 30 August 2019.

23.1.2024 | The EU Agriculture and Fisheries Council discussed international trade in agricultural products, the organisation of the strategic dialogue on the future of agriculture, a proposal for a regulation on a forest monitoring framework and, on Finland’s initiative, large carnivore matters.

25.1.2019 | In its meeting, the working group preparing the Management Plan for the Wolf Population discussed the connection of the Finnish wolf population to the populations in Scandinavia. They also talked about wolf damage to reindeer and how to prevent it. The reindeer husbandry area is an important migration route for the Finnish and Scandinavian wolf populations.

27.2.2019 | In its meeting on 15 February 2019, the working group preparing the Management Plan for the Wolf Population discussed illegal hunting of wolves and measures to improve the social acceptance of the wolf. According to a police estimate, illegal hunting of wolves has been commonplace in Finland. However, only a small number of incidents of illegal hunting of wolves come to the attention of the supervisory authorities.

14.2.2019 | The working group preparing the Management Plan for the Wolf Population discussed multi-species management of large carnivore and cervid populations that takes into account the interdependencies and relationships between the species. They also explored the theme from the perspective of social and economic impacts.

27.3.2019 | In its meeting, the steering group in charge of the Management Plan for the Wolf Population discussed multi-species population management, the question of acceptance of wolves in society and the importance of taking into account regional and local perspectives when updating the management plan. The next step in the project to update the Management Plan for the Wolf Population is to establish concrete measures and targets.

14.6.2021 | Working groups appointed by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry propose a five-year experiment to allow wolf hunting for population management purposes if the population is at a favourable conservation status. The Ministry will assess the possibility to allow hunting after the Natural Resources Institute Finland has published its interim report on the reference values for the favourable conservation status of the wolf population.

27.1.2021 | The Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry of Finland and the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment of the Russian Federation have agreed to expand cooperation on game management. Minister of Agriculture and Forestry Jari Leppä and Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Aleksandr Kozlov signed the Joint Statement on 27 January 2021. The signing of the statement took place via remote connection.

13.3.2019 | In its meeting on 26 February 2019, the working group preparing the Management Plan for the Wolf Population discussed GPS collaring of wolves and communications related to wolves. The working group stressed the importance of collaring in gathering important data for population estimates and research. Collaring also provides citizens with necessary information, particularly in areas with new wolf populations, and helps to prevent attacks on hunting dogs, for instance.

27.2.2019 | Susikannan hoitosuunnitelman valmisteluryhmä keskusteli 15.2.2019 pidetyssä kokouksessaan susien laittomasta tappamisesta ja suden sosiaalisesta hyväksynnästä. Poliisin arvion mukaan suden laiton pyynti on ollut yleistä Suomessa. Valvontaviranomaisten tietoon laittomista tapoista tulee kuitenkin vain pieni osa.
