19.1.2024 | The European Commission published the conclusions of the assessment of the need for protection of the wolf population in December. The Commission proposes that the conservation status should be downgraded. Finland will bring this matter to the Agriculture and Fisheries Council on 23 January.

25.9.2024 | The European Commission gave a proposal to move the wolf from the list of strictly protected species to protected species in December 2023. On Wednesday 25 September, the EU Member States outlined that the adaptation of the conservation status will proceed to be decided by the Standing Committee of the Bern Convention.

28.11.2025 | Finnish Biodiversity Award 2023–2024 was given to an actor that had done something inspiring to halt biodiversity loss. The winner of the competition was Crowdsorsa mobile game that has already helped fight against invasive alien species in Finland on a total of 4 million square metres. Honourable mentions were awarded to the cities of Kauniainen and Vantaa. The prizes were awarded by Minister of Climate and the Environment Sari Multala.

3.11.2019 | The Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry has approved the new Management Plan for the Wolf Population in Finland. The management plan is a tool for managing the Finnish wolf population and wolf-related conflicts and an important means for implementing wolf policy. A wolf forum will be set up to monitor the implementation of the updated plan.

23.1.2024 | The EU Agriculture and Fisheries Council discussed international trade in agricultural products, the organisation of the strategic dialogue on the future of agriculture, a proposal for a regulation on a forest monitoring framework and, on Finland’s initiative, large carnivore matters.

14.6.2021 | Working groups appointed by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry propose a five-year experiment to allow wolf hunting for population management purposes if the population is at a favourable conservation status. The Ministry will assess the possibility to allow hunting after the Natural Resources Institute Finland has published its interim report on the reference values for the favourable conservation status of the wolf population.

27.1.2021 | The Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry of Finland and the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment of the Russian Federation have agreed to expand cooperation on game management. Minister of Agriculture and Forestry Jari Leppä and Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Aleksandr Kozlov signed the Joint Statement on 27 January 2021. The signing of the statement took place via remote connection.

14.12.2023 | Statsrådet tillsatte den 14 december en naturpanel för perioden 2024–2027. Till ordförande valdes professor Janne Kotiaho från Jyväskylä universitet. Naturpanelen tar fram vetenskaplig kunskap om den biologiska mångfalden till stöd för beslutsfattandet.
