Minister of the Interior Paula Risikko is visiting the United States between 23 and 26 May 2017. She will attend a meeting of the United Nations Security Council Counter-Terrorism Committee on Thursday, 25 May.

She will attend a meeting of the United Nations Security Council Counter-Terrorism Committee on Thursday, 25 May. The Minister will address the Committee on proven Finnish practices, relating to the UN Plan of Action to Prevent Violent Extremism, used in Finland to combat violent radicalisation and marginalisation.

The Committee has expressed an interest in the Finnish approach of close cooperation with and between the authorities and civic society organisations. Minister Risikko will tell the Committee about the simultaneous use of soft and hard anti-terrorism measures as well as Finland’s intensified efforts to counter violent radicalisation and terrorism.

Comprising all 15 Security Council members, the Counter-Terrorism Committee was established in 2001 in the wake of the 11 September terrorist attacks in New York to monitor the implementation of the counter-terrorism measures required of UN Member States. The Committee has since been tasked with other equivalent monitoring duties as well.

Extensive preparations have gone into the visit which gives Finland a remarkable opportunity to make a contribution at the level of the United Nations. The visit will prevent Minister Risikko from attending the funeral of President Koivisto.

Full and diverse agenda

In addition to addressing the Committee, Minister Risikko will meet with UN experts in the fields of immigration, peacekeeping, civilian crisis management, and anti-radicalisation and counter-terrorism. She will also be hosted by the City of New York Police Department, where the topics to be covered are gang prevention and bridging the gaps between the city’s neighbourhoods.

Updates from the visit will be posted in the Ministry of the Interior blog and on Twitter with the hashtag #RisikkoUSA.
