Minister Talvitie visited Ukraine
Minister of Science and Culture Mari-Leena Talvitie visited Ukraine from January 31 to February 1. At the invitation of Ukraine's Minister of Culture Mykola Tochytskyi, the Minister attended an international ministerial meeting in Uzhhorod, Zakarpatska region. It was the minister's first official visit abroad.
- On the day of our arrival, Russia attacked a historic site in Odessa. This made the topic of the ministerial meeting even more relevant. Taking care of our culture and cultural heritage is increasingly important during conflicts, says Minister Talvitie.
At the event, the participants discussed culture as a strengthening factor for national security, combating illicit trade in cultural goods, and including culture in Ukraine's reconstruction and recovery.
The meeting adopted a declaration on the importance of culture for resilience and as part of the reconstruction of Ukraine. The countries and international organizations participating in the meeting emphasized the importance of cooperation, as this will give the support strength and scope.
At the meeting, Ukraine proposed the establishment of a fund to save and protect its cultural heritage. Minister Talvitie highlighted Finland's unwavering support for Ukraine and emphasized the role of culture:
- We will support Ukraine for as long as there is a need for it. Culture plays an incredibly strong role in bringing people together, and this is emphasized during crises.
In connection with the meeting, Minister Talvitie also met with the EU Commissioner for Intergenerational Fairness, Youth, Culture and Sport, Glen Micallef, with whom she discussed the new Commission's work and Finland's main messages.
