Prime Minister Marin meets with representatives of Sámi Parliament

On 12 August, Prime Minister Sanna Marin met with President of the Sámi Parliament Tuomas Aslak Juuso and other representatives of the Sámi Parliament at the House of the Estates. The meeting was arranged at the Sámi Parliament’s initiative. State Secretary Henrik Haapajärvi was also in attendance, along with officials from the Prime Minister’s Office and the Ministry of Justice.

Topics discussed at the meeting included the reform of the Act on the Sámi Parliament and other topical issues. Prime Minister Marin said that it was important for the amendment to the Act on the Sámi Parliament to be brought to Parliament as soon as possible. 

Preparations for the Truth and Reconciliation Commission concerning the Sámi people referred to in the Government Programme are being carried out under the leadership of the Prime Minister’s Office. Prime Minister Marin expressed her hope that the Truth and Reconciliation Commission could begin its important work as soon as possible.

The meeting highlighted the importance of continuing and intensifying cooperation and discussions. The objectives of the Sámi Parliament have many points in common with those of the Government Programme.
 
At the meeting, the Sámi Parliament invited the Prime Minister to visit the Sámi homeland.
