Prime Minister Orpo and Icelandic Prime Minister Jakobsdóttir meet in Iceland
On Sunday 25 June, Prime Minister Petteri Orpo met with Prime Minister of Iceland Katrín Jakobsdóttir in Reykjavik. Their discussions focused on the situation in Russia, support for Ukraine, and bilateral issues between Finland and Iceland. They also discussed Nordic cooperation, Arctic issues and climate matters.
“Finland and Iceland have a strong, close relationship. I thanked Iceland for its support during Finland’s NATO membership process. Our discussions focused in particular on the events in Russia. I said that in addition to strengthening security, the cornerstones of the new Finnish Government’s international policy are respect for human rights, equality, democracy and the rule of law. Finland is an active member of the EU, NATO and international organisations such as the UN,” Prime Minister Orpo said after the meeting.
Prime Minister Orpo is in Iceland for the summer meeting of Nordic prime ministers, which began on Sunday. Along with the Nordic prime ministers, the Icelandic Presidency of the Nordic Council of Ministers invited Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to the meeting.
Prime Minister Orpo’s programme on Sunday also included a visit to the NATO Security Zone in Keflavik.
