Prime Minister Petteri Orpo emphasises the importance of proactively influencing EU decision-making. In a letter to the members of his Government, Prime Minister Orpo highlights several priorities for Finland’s EU policy. He writes that geopolitical uncertainties, such as Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, create pressure to strengthen the EU and prepare it for reforms. Finland must actively influence the EU’s upcoming objectives on every level of preparation and decision-making.

According to Prime Minister Orpo, key topics in the coming months will include strengthening Europe’s defence capability and crisis resilience, improving the EU’s economic competitiveness, streamlining the internal market, and managing migration. The transition to clean energy production must be accelerated and the bioeconomy promoted. Regulation of forests and land use must take into account different circumstances in the Member States.

Prime Minister Orpo’s letter makes it clear that the Government is committed to systematic efforts to influence EU decision-making. The Government's joint priorities and the ministries’ own plans will add substance to these efforts.
