Minister of Education Anders Adlercreutz met Estonia's Minister of Education and Research Kristina Kallas in Tallinn on 18 February. A Finnish - Estonian declaration on digitalisation, media literacy and artificial intelligence was published during the visit. The ministers also discussed these themes with experts and students.

The purpose of the declaration is to underline that artificial intelligence, digitalisation and media literacy are essential civic skills for everyone and should be continuously upgraded. The declaration states that it is important to be involved in determining the future uses and role of artificial intelligence in Finland, Estonia and Europe. It is important to make sure we actively guide the transition in AI.

Education plays a key role in digitalisation and in the advances being made in artificial intelligence. The more aware we are, the more knowledgeable we are and the more engaged we are, the stronger we are in tackling any challenges we might encounter. Finland and Estonia want to take the lead in this,” says Minister Anders Adlercreutz.

The declaration was signed at Pelgulinna Riigigümnaasium, a state upper secondary school in Tallinn. The ministers discussed with the students the importance of critical thinking, resilience and the role of social media as part of the information environment.

Topics of discussion in the ministers’ bilateral meeting included the Government Proposal issued in Finland related to students’ personal mobile devices in schools. After the discussion, the ministers met with experts specialised in these areas.

The programme also included a visit to Rakett69 science studios and to Unicorn Squad, a movement for girls that provides knowledge and skills in technology as hobby especially for girls aged 8 to 12.
