“It is a great honour to start leading this historical project. With the group of experts appointed to the Board of Directors of the Foundation we wish to create the best possible conditions for the museum to operate in the future in a way that is economically, ecologically and culturally sustainable. The world is changing fast and it encourages us to seek bold and responsible solutions,” says Timo Laitinen, who was appointed as the Chair of the Foundation for the Finnish Museum of Architecture and Design.

Aim to create a visionary museum of the future

The new Museum of Architecture and Design will be a visionary museum of the future. In the preparation stage that is now under way a comprehensive project plan will be drawn up for the work to establish the museum and construct the new building for it. The aim is conclude the final implementation decision on the museum in early 2023.

The new building planned for the museum would be located in the South Harbour of Helsinki as part of the more extensive development project concerning Makasiiniranta. An international quality and concept contest is currently under way on developing the area. In this contest a site will be reserved for the museum, but it does not include the design of the museum building, for which a separate architecture contest will be organised in due course.
