Finland has sent material assistance to the regions affected by earthquake in Myanmar through the EU Civil Protection Mechanism. The assistance consists of storage and hall tents and water purification tablets requested by the country.

The earthquake that struck the country on 28 March caused extensive damage. Armed groups have been fighting in Myanmar for a long time. The earthquake has affected areas in conflict zones, making it more difficult to deliver assistance.

Finland has also sent an expert to Bangkok to support in the coordination of the material assistance delivered to Myanmar. Because of the difficult security situation in Myanmar, the international group of experts is placed in Bangkok. The experts are collaborating with the aid organisations operating on location to establish the need for assistance.

Finland is active in providing expert assistance

Any country can request assistance via the EU Civil Protection Mechanism if it faces a crisis that it cannot handle alone. Assistance provided through the Civil Protection Mechanism is drawn from national resources. The assistance may take the form of specialised rescue teams or expert and material assistance.

The Ministry of the Interior decides on the provision of international assistance related to rescue services and civil protection. The Emergency Services Academy Finland is the employer of seconded experts and is also responsible for the training, recruitment and logistics of experts and the practical implementation of international civil protection operations.
