Finnish Government supports negotiations for EU–Interpol agreement
The Finnish Government submitted to Parliament a Union communication on a cooperation agreement between the European Union and the International Criminal Police Organisation (Interpol). The negotiations for the agreement are expected to conclude by the end of this year.
The EU–Interpol agreement would help combat cross-border and transnational terrorism and serious and organised crime. It would facilitate cooperation between the EU and Interpol in preventing and combatting terrorism and serious and organised crime. As the agreement would also apply to the exchange and transfer of personal data between the EU and Interpol, the Government considers it important that the agreement provide the necessary safeguards and guarantees to ensure the protection of privacy and fundamental rights and freedoms of individuals.
The EU–Interpol agreement would not necessitate any changes to Finland’s national legislation. It would be part of EU law, and therefore binding on Finland.
