The Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment is surveying Finland’s possibilities to participate in the World Expo 2025, hosted by Japan in Osaka. All companies and other corporations interested in the Japanese market will be invited to join.

World Expos are traditional international events that date back to the 1850s. The BIE (Bureau International des Expositions) in Paris is in charge of overseeing the World Expos. It has 170 Member States, Finland among them. The current interval of World Expos is five years. The most recent World Expo was in Dubai in 2021–2022, and it was attended by more than one hundred Finnish companies. The main purpose of World Expos is to promote trade and economic relations between countries and to establish new contacts among partners.

Japan is the third largest economy in the world, and Finland’s exports to Japan have been on a strong rising curve. Trade relations have been facilitated by the free trade agreement between the EU and Japan that was concluded before the pandemic. Finland and Japan have good trade relations, and Finland is known in Japan for high quality products, iconic design and technological and digital innovations.

Companies attending the World Expo in Osaka would be able to showcase their expertise both to an international audience and to Japanese decision-makers in business and government. Among the technologies Japan has been investing in in the past decade is clean technology in which Finnish companies have a lot to offer.

The theme of the World Expo 2025 in Osaka is “Designing Future Society for Our lives”. It aims to find and present solutions to the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

The interest of Finnish business and industry in participating in the exhibition will be surveyed during spring 2022. The Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment has commissioned CEO Jukka Salo from the consulting agency Kris & Vasco to take care of contacts with companies.  He will work closely together with the Ministry and Business Finland.
