Teollisuuden Voima submits EIA programme on final disposal of very low-level waste in Olkiluoto nuclear power plant area
On 14 August 2020, Teollisuuden voima Plc submitted an environmental impact assessment programme (EIA programme) on the final disposal of very low-level nuclear waste in the Olkiluoto nuclear power plant area in Eurajoki to the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment. The alternatives are constructing a new near-surface disposal facility or expanding the deep geological repository currently in use.
On 14 August 2020, Teollisuuden voima Plc submitted an environmental impact assessment programme (EIA programme) on the final disposal of very low-level nuclear waste in the Olkiluoto nuclear power plant area in Eurajoki to the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment. The alternatives are constructing a new near-surface disposal facility or expanding the deep geological repository currently in use.
The environmental impact assessment programme is the first step in the environmental impact assessment procedure. The EIA programme is a plan concerning the investigations and arrangements required to assess the environmental impact of the project, prepared by the party responsible for the project. The Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment acts as the coordinating authority.
Several alternative ways to issue statements and opinions concerning the EIA programme between 21 August and 21 September 2020
The Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment will request authorities and corporations to submit statements on the programme. It will also organise a public consultation for citizens and communities. The consultation period is between 21 August and 21 September 2020, and the consultation will be carried out online in the Lausuntopalvelu.fi service.
Statements and opinions can also be delivered to the registry of the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment by email (kirjaamo8at)tem.fi ),by mail (PO Box 32, FI-00023 Government), or by visiting the Ministry's registry at Ritarikatu 2 B, FI-00170 Helsinki. Please include the register number VN/16079/2020 in all statements and opinions. The submitted opinions and statements will be published on the Ministry’s website.
The Ministry will also organise a public event concerning the EIA programme, the details of which will be confirmed later.[031] If the COVID-19 situation allows, the public consultation event will be held at the municipal government office of Eurajoki on 8 September 2020 from 18.00 to 20.00. The address is Kalliotie 5, 27100 Eurajoki.
All statements and opinions presented at the consultations will be taken into consideration in the coordinating authority’s statement on the EIA programme. After the programme phase of the EIA procedure, the procedure will continue with the EIA report.
