The Ministry of the Environment will update its strategy as part of the preparations for future challenges and government terms. The online discussion that has now been opened ‘Where is the Ministry of the Environment headed?’ gathers views on what the role and targets of the ministry should be to address the changes in society, and what we should achieve by 2035.

Geopolitical tensions challenge international cooperation, public finances are under pressure, social inequality is increasing, population is ageing and discussion in society is becoming more and more polarised. At the same time, climate change and biodiversity loss are progressing. In view of these changes, decisions need to be made: what do we focus on, what is the most important and how can we reach the targets?

“Right now, numerous major changes are taking place in our society. All these also have impacts on the Ministry of the Environment’s activities – and our role. We want to hear from our partners and the public what we should focus on in this situation to reach our targets,” says Juho Korpi, Development Director at the Ministry of the Environment.

On the online platform, the participants can give their opinion (agree / disagree / pass) on claims that have been published and add their own claims. The discussion is anonymous, respectful and moderated to keep it appropriate and constructive.

“Voxit discussion is easy to participate, and it will evolve according to what people will bring up as relevant perspectives. We hope that as many people as possible will join the discussion.”

The ministry wishes to gather views from a variety of stakeholders: municipalities, businesses, scientists, foundations, young people, public officials in the administrative branch, and other ministries. Both those working in close cooperation with the Ministry of the Environment and those who are otherwise interested in our themes are welcome to participate.

The results will be used in the strategy process and in the ministry’s work to influence the content of the government programmes.

Examples of claims to be voted on

  • Finland has succeeded in the fight against the ecological sustainability crisis, i.e. climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution.
  • Clean energy transition can be carried through without causing significant harm to nature or waters.
  • Energy efficiency of new buildings must be improved even if this increases the costs of construction.
  • The Ministry of the Environment should assume a stronger role in combatting false and misleading information concerning the environment.

“It will be very interesting to see what the issues and solutions are where there is a wider consensus and where the views diverge from each other. We also hope to get surprising observations that we can use in our strategy process,” Korpi says.

This is how you can participate

  • The discussion opens on 16 March 2026. Voxit discussion
