EU foreign ministers to discuss Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine and situation in Middle East
EU foreign affairs ministers will meet at the Informal Meeting of Foreign Affairs Ministers (Gymnich) in Copenhagen on 29–30 August. Minister for Foreign Affairs Elina Valtonen will represent Finland at the meeting.
At their informal meeting, the foreign ministers will discuss Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine.
“Russia’s aim with its war of aggression is to change the European security architecture. Russia’s leadership is playing for time and continues to bomb civilian targets in Ukraine. It is important for the EU to increase pressure on Russia together with its partners. The EU is preparing its 19th sanctions package. We must further undermine Russia’s ability to continue its war of aggression and ensure that Russia and its leadership will bear full responsibility for the damage and international crimes committed,” says Minister for Foreign Affairs Elina Valtonen.
“Europe must continue its military support for Ukraine’s legitimate self-defence. Finland will participate in Ukraine’s security arrangements to the extent possible,” Minister Valtonen says.
The informal meeting will also focus on the current situation in the Middle East.
In the war in Gaza, the most urgent measures are to achieve a ceasefire, to alleviate the humanitarian emergency and to secure the release of the hostages. Israel has gone way too far in its military action. The EU must be united in its support for a ceasefire and promote access to humanitarian aid in Gaza. The EU’s unwavering support for a two-state solution will also remain essential. Israel’s intention to take over Gaza City and promote the E1 settlement plan in the West Bank is unacceptable,” Minister Valtonen says.
