Minister for European Affairs Adlercreutz to take part in Europe Day event
Minister for European Affairs Anders Adlercreutz will open the Europe Day event at Helsinki Central Library Oodi on Tuesday 7 May. After delivering the opening address, Minister Adlercreutz will take part in a discussion with EU Youth Delegate Eetu Leinonen from the Finnish National Youth Council Allianssi. Together, they will discuss what young people would lose if Finland were not an EU Member State. They will also pinpoint issues that are likely to affect the lives of young people over the next EU electoral term. The discussion will be hosted by Europe Information.
The Europe Day programme at Oodi will feature a variety of other discussions about Finland, Europe, the European Union and the upcoming European elections. The event will take place on the third floor of Helsinki Central Library Oodi (Saarikoski rug, city centre side of the building). The event will also be streamed live at eurooppapaiva.fi. Europe Information and the other organisers will have info points open from 9.00 to 16.30 in the library’s multi-purpose hall.
Europe Day celebrations to begin on Saturday at Narinkkatori Square in Helsinki
Europe Day, traditionally held on 9 May, marks the anniversary of the Schuman Declaration. This year, the celebrations will be spread over two other days as 9 May is Ascension Day. The celebrations will begin on Saturday 4 May with a wide-ranging programme at Narinkkatori Square in Helsinki. The day will kick off with a joint performance by four Latvian choirs and a speech by EU Commissioner for International Partnerships Jutta Urpilainen.
In the afternoon, representatives from the parties in Parliament will take part in the great European election debate hosted by Markku Jokisipilä. The programme for the day will also include music and activities for the whole family.
Europe Information will have a tent in the square together with the European Commission and the European Parliament. Topical EU materials, such as newly updated maps of Europe, EU brochures and bookmarks, will also be available at the event.
