Minister for European Affairs Joakim Strand and Spanish State Secretary for the EU Fernando Mariano Sampedro Marcos to meet in Helsinki

Minister for European Affairs and Ownership Steering Joakim Strand and Spanish State Secretary for the European Union Fernando Mariano Sampedro Marcos will meet in Helsinki on Tuesday 4 March.

Their discussions will focus on the next EU multiannual financial framework (2028–), measures to improve the EU’s competitiveness, comprehensive preparedness in the Union and support for Ukraine on its path towards a just and lasting peace.

“In this difficult geopolitical situation, Europe has to find ways to guarantee its competitiveness and security. Achieving this requires determined cooperation throughout the EU. I am very pleased that my Spanish colleague and I have the opportunity to pave the way for a stronger Europe,” Minister Strand said.

Minister Strand and State Secretary Sampedro Marcos are colleagues on the EU General Affairs Council (GAC), which is responsible for a number of cross-cutting policy areas, including negotiations on the multiannual financial framework and EU enlargement. Questions related to the rule of law are also an established part of the GAC’s agenda.
