Nordic prime ministers send strong joint message: Our support for Ukraine will continue
The Nordic prime ministers and President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy met in Iceland on Monday 28 October. The meeting was held at Thingvellir National Park. At the end of the meeting, the Nordic prime ministers and the President of Ukraine published a joint statement.
“It is important for the Nordic countries to send a strong message that our support for Ukraine will continue. Supporting Ukraine is also the most important way to strengthen our own security,” Prime Minister Petteri Orpo said at the press conference after the meeting.
“We support the Ukraine Peace Formula and understand the importance of the victory plan. Peace must be achieved on Ukraine’s terms,” said Prime Minister Orpo.
Prime Minister Orpo and President Zelenskyy will continue their bilateral talks on Tuesday 29 October. “After today’s discussion, it is clear that we need to do even more to help Ukraine,” Orpo said.
Finland and Ukraine have been in close contact. For example, Prime Minister Orpo met with Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal in Helsinki on 18 October, and the following day Finland hosted a meeting on the Environmental Security pillar of the Ukraine Peace Formula.
Finland is one of Ukraine’s strongest economic supporters in proportion to its GDP. Finland has delivered more than EUR 3 billion in support to Ukraine, more than EUR 2 billion of which has been in the form of defence materiel.
Before the prime ministers’ meeting on Monday evening, Prime Minister Orpo met with Secretary General of the Nordic Council of Ministers Karen Ellemann. They discussed Finland’s Presidency of the Nordic Council of Ministers in 2025. Prime Minister Orpo will present the programme for Finland’s Presidency at the Nordic Council Session in Reykjavik on Tuesday 29 October.
