Prime Minister Sanna Marin will attend two meetings in Brussels this week: the EU-ASEAN summit on 14 December and the European Council on 15 December.

The topics on the agenda for the European Council meeting are Ukraine, energy and the economy, security and defence, the Southern Neighbourhood, and external relations.

Prime Minister Marin attended a video meeting today with President of the European Council Charles Michel and the leaders of seven other EU Member States. The meeting was in preparation for the European Council. In addition to Finland, the small group session was attended by Bulgaria, Estonia, Ireland, Hungary, Austria, Slovakia and Sweden. President Michel will also organise similar meetings for other groups of countries.

The summit of the EU Member States and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations is taking place for the first time.

Its purpose is to strengthen the EU-ASEAN strategic partnership established in 2020 and to agree on areas for closer cooperation between the EU and the ASEAN countries. At the summit, the leaders will discuss global and regional security issues, economic and trade cooperation and sustainable development, including the green and digital transition.
