Finland’s Prime Minister Petteri Orpo attended the international Munich Security Conference on Friday 14 February 2025. The Prime Minister had several high-level meetings with European leaders in connection with the conference.

During the day, Prime Minister Orpo met with President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen, High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs Kaja Kallas, President of the European Council Antonio Costa, Leader of the German Christian Democratic Union (CDU) Friedrich Merz and NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte. Their discussions focused on Europe’s obligation and ability to support Ukraine towards a just peace in the current geopolitical situation.

The Nordic and Baltic leaders (NB8) also held a joint meeting in connection with the conference and issued a joint statement on 14 February. They emphasised their countries’ continued strong support for Ukraine, the importance of a just and lasting peace and their countries’ strong investment in their own defence.

“Finland and Europe are committed to Ukraine’s sovereignty and to achieving a just peace. Russia started an illegal war of aggression, and it should not be rewarded for its brutal actions in Ukraine. It is about respecting international law and fulfilling our moral obligation. The outcome of the war will have fundamental and long-lasting effects on European and transatlantic security. That is why Ukraine and Europe must be strongly involved in this peace process,” said Prime Minister Orpo.

The Munich Security Conference is an important forum for debating international foreign and security policy. Founded in the 1960s, the conference aims to build trust and promote conflict resolution.
