Prime Minister Orpo to attend European Council – EU leaders aim to agree on support for Ukraine

Prime Minister Petteri Orpo will attend a special meeting of the European Council in Brussels on Thursday 1 February. Items on the agenda include the mid-term revision of the multiannual financial framework and, in particular, the continuation of support for Ukraine.

In December of last year, twenty-six EU Member States agreed on the content of the mid-term revision of the multiannual financial framework for 2021–2027. A key element of the package is EUR 50 billion in support for Ukraine. The special European Council aims to formally agree on the mid-term revision of the framework at the meeting. 

“In Finland’s view, it is very important that we confirm the agreement reached on the mid-term revision without delay,” says Prime Minister Petteri Orpo.

Before the special European Council in Brussels, a memorial ceremony will be held on 31 January for former European Commission President Jacques Delors. Prime Minister Petteri Orpo will represent Finland at the event. Former Prime Minister Paavo Lipponen was also invited to attend.

From 1985 to 1994, French Commission leader Delors was an active proponent of European integration. Among other accomplishments, Delors’ initiatives resulted in the single market, the European Economic and Monetary Union and the Erasmus student exchange programme.
