Prime Minister Orpo to host visit by European Council President

President of the European Council António Costa and Prime Minister Petteri Orpo will meet for discussions on Ukraine and other key EU issues in Helsinki on 8 September. Prime Minister Orpo has invited President Costa to meet at the Prime Minister’s official residence, Kesäranta.

In their meeting, Prime Minister Orpo and President Costa will discuss how the EU Member States can strengthen their support for Ukraine and step up the sanctions imposed on Russia.

“Russia has continued its attacks on the front and its cruel strikes on civilians. Europe will continue its strong and united response. We are increasing our support for Ukraine and preparing our 19th package of sanctions on Russia,” said Prime Minister Orpo.

Prime Minister Orpo and President Costa will also discuss efforts to strengthen European defence, negotiations on the EU’s next multiannual financial framework, EU trade agreements and measures to improve the Union’s competitiveness. 

While in Helsinki, European Council President António Costa will also meet with President of the Republic Alexander Stubb.
