Press release

Prime Minister Petteri Orpo has instructed the Prime Minister’s Office to continue its work to reform the national science panels in a way that safeguards the ability of climate research and nature research to continue as separate structures with their own research areas.

In line with the Government Programme and Jouni Backman’s report on the matter, the next stage of preparations will involve drawing up a proposal on how to coordinate the work of the different panels and gain synergies in support services by bringing the work under the umbrella organisation of the Prime Minister’s Office. The preparations will focus on ensuring the independence of scientific guidance while safeguarding the statutory duties of the panels.

The next stage of preparations led by the Prime Minister’s Office will include consultations with the experts on the science panels, the users of the data they analyse and the relevant ministries. The Government will decide on the matter based on a proposal to be put forth at a later date.
