Project status

Goals and results

The project goals are the following:
• The regulatory environment enables and encourages compensation under the nature Conservation Act while respecting the mitigation hierarchy;
• The regulatory environment encourages the implementation and funding of nature-positive actions;
• There is a market place/places and they are known to operators;
• There are tools for calculating nature credits and they are known to operators;
• Possible intermediary organisations in the biodiversity markets have been investigated;
• The nature credits register operates at the Centre for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment;
• Nature credits can be utilised as part of investment activities;
• Producers and financiers will make full use of the nature credits register.

Starting points

Investments in mitigating climate change and halting biodiversity loss are largely made by the private sector, and linking them to capital markets is important. Large-scale investments are still needed from businesses, households and the public sector to help mitigate climate change, halt biodiversity loss and transition to a circular economy. Market-based carbon and natural value markets would further diversify the opportunities for competitive business in Finland.
