15.10.2021 | The centenary of Finland’s independence in 2017 showed that small-scale everyday matters with positive aspects that are characteristic of Finnishness can also be celebrated in connection with official anniversaries. This emerges from a study produced by the Center for Cultural Policy Research Cupore, Owal Group and Demos Helsinki. The three thematic reports of the study assessed the impacts of Finland’s centenary year.

4.9.2020 | According to a report published on 4 September as part of the research project on the centenary of Finland’s independence, the implementation of the centenary celebration year was successful in generating enthusiasm for new forms of cooperation, but this cooperation has continued only sporadically following the centennial year. The research is being conducted by the Center for Cultural Policy Research Cupore, Owal Group and Demos Helsinki.

14.10.2021 | Thursday 14 October 2021 marks the 100th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Finland and Lithuania. Finland recognised Lithuania’s independence on 14 October 1921.

30.11.2022 | On 7 December, Prime Minister Sanna Marin will host an Independence Day celebration for over 560 children at the House of the Estates. Minister of Finance Annika Saarikko, Minister of Justice Anna-Maja Henriksson and Minister of the Environment and Climate Change Maria Ohisalo will also attend the event.

This is revealed in a new study carried out by the Center for Cultural Policy Research Cupore, Owal Group and Demos Helsinki. On the other hand, the celebration’s success in its achieving its main objective, increasing people’s sense of belonging, was more short-term.

9.6.2021 | Next year will mark 100 years since the Åland Islands gained autonomy. The autonomy celebrations will take place throughout the centenary year, from 9 June 2021 to 9 June 2022. Self-government is a part of Finnish democracy and gives the Finnish administrative structure its unique and multi-dimensional nature. The Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Finland is a part of the anniversary events.

16.11.2022 | This year’s Independence Day festivities will culminate with a celebration for children, when Prime Minister Sanna Marin hosts the Children’s Independence Day party on 7 December at the House of the Estates. Hundreds of ten-year-olds from all over Finland – two from each municipality – have been invited to the event.

8.4.2021 | The Finnish Government launched the International Gender Equality Prize in 2017, when Finland celebrated the centenary of its independence. The purpose of the prize is to promote gender equality in global contexts and to promote discussion about equality. The nominations are open until 16 May 2021.
