16.1.2025 | On 16 January 2025, the Government appointed Tomi Lounema (M.Sc. Engineering) as Director General of the Finnish Safety and Chemicals Agency (Tukes) for the period of 1 February 2025–31 January 2030.

11.5.2026 | The Ministry of Transport and Communications is inviting comments on the draft government proposal concerning the implementation of the Ship-Source Pollution Directive. The necessary amendments would be made to the Environmental Protection Act. Comments may be submitted until 18 June 2026.

22.12.2021 | The Act on the Safe Handling and Storage of Dangerous Chemicals and Explosives, the Mining Act and the Nuclear Energy Act will be amended as of 31 December 2021. The legislative amendments will complement the implementation of EU legislation in national legislation.

16.6.2022 | “Terrafame’s battery chemicals plant is a good example of how we are developing the Finnish mining and battery industry towards production of higher value added. Finland is introducing advanced processes and technologies and improving competences in a new area that will enable a responsible green transition,” Minister of Economic Affairs Mika Lintilä said at the opening of the plant in Sotkamo on 16 June 2022.

7.4.2026 | The evaluation explored the objectives of the Climate Act and the means to achieve these from the perspectives of impact, cost-effectiveness and acceptability. The process was led by the Ministry of the Environment. Meeting the objectives requires additional measures, especially in the land use sector.

7.10.2021 | On 7 October 2021, the Government submitted to Parliament a proposal to amend the Act on the Safe Handling and Storage of Dangerous Chemicals and Explosives, the Mining Act and the Nuclear Energy Act.

13.11.2025 | The Government proposes that the President of the Republic approve amendments to the Rail Transport Act and the Act on Transport Services on 14 November 2025. The amendments will enhance the safety and security of urban rail transport and allow more time to procure rolling stock that meets EU requirements for use in the forest and chemicals industries.

9.12.2025 | For the first time, biotechnology is among the proposed themes of IPCEIs. The EU Member States want to promote biotechnology projects by including biotechnology in Important Projects of Common European Interest (IPCEIs). Together with Germany and Estonia, Finland has been preparing three thematic IPCEI proposals for biotechnology since November 2024.

8.12.2025 | The seventh session of the United Nations Environment Assembly UNEA, the world’s highest-level decision-making body for matters related to the environment, will take place in Nairobi, Kenya from 8 to 12 December 2025. The theme of the session is ‘Advancing sustainable solutions for a resilient planet’. Finland’s UNEA delegation in Nairobi will be led by Minister of Climate and the Environment Sari Multala.

21.11.2025 | The EU trade ministers will convene for a meeting of the Foreign Affairs Council in Brussels on 24 November to discuss the Union’s trade relations with the United States and China. The ministers will also take stock of the EU’s ongoing bilateral trade negotiations. The participation of Minister Tavio in the meeting has been cancelled. Finland will be represented by Finland’s EU Ambassador Jori Arvonen.

30.7.2025 | During the summer, there have been significantly more drownings and serious near misses than usual at public swimming areas. The Ministry of the Interior, the Finnish Safety and Chemicals Agency (Tukes), the National Police Board of Finland and the Finnish Swimming Teaching and Lifesaving Federation met on 30 July to discuss safety at swimming areas.

19.7.2025 | The European Union has adopted its 18th package of sanctions as a response to Russia’s ongoing war of aggression against Ukraine and its lack of willingness to negotiate for a lasting peace. The EU expands its sanctions especially to target the energy and financial sectors and Russia’s shadow fleet and to prevent the circumvention of sanctions. The EU lowers the oil price cap. In addition, the EU tightens its sanctions against Belarus.

4.11.2025 | On 3 November 2025, the European Commission announced that 61 projects had been selected for funding under the latest Innovation Fund call for net-zero technologies. The projects will receive a total of EUR 2.9 billion in support. Five Finnish projects are among those selected: NotNukeOne, SCOOP, MAGHYC, NEXT HYDROMET and SB-VARKAUS.

30.10.2025 | The world countries will convene at the Climate Change Conference COP30 in Belém, Brazil on 10–21 November. The countries are required to update their Nationally Determined Contributions every five years, and the next round of submissions is due just ahead the conference.

The legislative amendments would enhance the safety and security of urban rail transport and give an extension of time to the forest and chemicals industries for procuring rolling stock that meets the EU requirements. The deadline for submitting comments is 5 March 2025.
