16.3.2026 | In its meeting on Wednesday 11 March, the parliamentary research, development and innovation (RDI) monitoring group discussed the use of additional central government funding for research and development (R&D). Representatives of the Council of Rectors of Finnish Universities UNIFI, the Rectors’ Conference of Finnish Universities of Applied Sciences Arene and the Consortium of State Research Institutions Tulanet attended the meeting to share their views.

24.4.2026 | The Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) will meet in London from 27 April to 1 May 2026. IMO Member States are expected to decide the next steps in negotiations on reducing greenhouse gas emissions from shipping. Other topics to be discussed include specifications to the rules on the carbon intensity and energy efficiency of vessels, the regulation of ballast water and guidance on reducing underwater noise.

17.11.2020 | Four new competence clusters have been added to the Academy of Finland’s Flagship Programme. The Flagship Programme’s third call focused on collaboration between research teams and the business sector, and also on high-quality research with impact and the capacity for renewal. The Finnish Flagship decisions are part of the implementation of the new flexible partnership model of the Government’s RDI roadmap.

11.12.2025 | Minister for European Affairs and Ownership Steering Joakim Strand attended an informal meeting of EU ministers for European affairs in Lviv, Ukraine, on 10–11 December. Discussions at the meeting focused on support for Ukraine on its path to EU membership. The meeting offered an opportunity to assess Ukraine’s progress and strengthen support for the necessary reforms.

3.3.2022 | On 3 March, the Government adopted a decision on the action plan for Finland’s maritime policy. The plan includes 44 concrete measures for all maritime sectors. The action plan places particular emphasis on protection of the seas, the maritime cluster and marine production.

19.4.2021 | Building a battery cluster in Finland continues successfully through the measures included in the Battery Strategy and the recent capitalisation of Finnish Minerals Group.

14.12.2022 | The joint declaration signed in Turku on 13 December 2022 will help develop sustainable shipping and shipbuilding and strengthen the Finnish maritime cluster.

25.2.2025 | The Government’s main objective is to return Finland to a growth path. Concentrating the state’s capital investment activities under the Finnish Industry Investment Group is part of this work. Together with a stronger industrial policy task, additional capitalisation and a new investment strategy, Tesi will become an even stronger promoter of growth, renewal and investment.

26.1.2026 | The Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment appointed a working group to prepare a programme to prevent segregation. The working group will identify measures to reduce segregation. The programme is due to be completed by the end of 2026.

24.1.2019 | The Government’s plenary session of 24 January adopted the guidelines for Finland’s marine and maritime policy. According to the vision for the policy, Finland has global influence and produces solutions to ensure that the use of marine natural resources is sustainable, the status of the marine environment is good, and the impacts of climate change do not exceed the carrying capacity of the oceans.

13.5.2025 | Minister for Foreign Trade and Development Ville Tavio will make an export promotion visit to Singapore and Malaysia on 19–23 May. The Minister will be accompanied by a delegation of some 30 companies.

18.6.2025 | The Campus Incubators programme promoting new entrepreneurship in higher education institution campuses in Helsinki, and the Spark programme supporting entrepreneurship among immigrant women have won the national stage of the competition for the European Enterprise Promotion Awards (EEPA). They will represent Finland at the European competition.
