7.5.2026 | The Government proposes legislative changes that would make it easier for people claiming unemployment benefits to study. According to the proposal, jobseekers aged at least 25 years could enrol for open higher education studies at universities, universities of applied sciences, community learning centres and summer universities without losing their unemployment benefit.

10.12.2025 | An independent group of experts has conducted a broad-based interim evaluation of the wellbeing services county reform, which was published on 10 December. Minister of Social Affairs and Health Kaisa Juuso, Minister of Local and Regional Government Anna-Kaisa Ikonen and Minister of the Interior Mari Rantanen consider the findings valuable.

23.11.2023 | On 23 November 2023, the Government appointed new members to the Research and Innovation Council. The purpose of the Research and Innovation Council is to support the Government in developing its long-term, comprehensive research and innovation policy.

10.2.2023 | A group of international experts that evaluated the quality and impact of research at the Finnish Geospatial Research Institute FGI of the National Land Survey considers these as excellent. The evaluation report was published today, on 10 February 2023. 

29.11.2023 | This autumn, the revised Labour Force Barometer focuses on the future prospects of the technology industry and the social welfare, health and wellbeing sectors. The greatest shortage of labour is in the health and social services sector, where skilled workers are needed for the care of older people, in particular. The outlook for the technology sector is expected to improve after next summer.

24.10.2023 | Finland has ranked eighth in the Gender Equality Index for the European Union (EU). The Index measured gender equality in various domains, such as work, health and power.

27.2.2023 | For two decades, efforts were made to build a central government and a well-functioning security sector in Afghanistan. However, the country once again finds itself in the firm grasp of the Taliban, despite major international interventions. It is astonishing how quickly the Taliban were able to regain power. A Policy Brief published on 27 February aims to find out how this was possible by means of systems analysis.

6.6.2022 | The determined promotion of exports and internationalisation in Finnish business life is increasingly important. An efficiently operating Team Finland network plays a key role in this. According to an assessment published by the Government’s analysis, assessment and research activities on 6 June, the operating model of the network has clearly developed but there is still room for improvement in the network activities.

18.5.2022 | An international evaluation commissioned by the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment of the ongoing SAFIR2022 and KYT2022 safety research programmes for nuclear power plants and nuclear waste management has been completed. The evaluation, which also provided feedback on the preliminary plan for the SAFER2028 research programme, was published on 17 May 2022.

25.11.2021 | On Thursday 25 November, the Government adopted a decision on the 2022 plan for analysis, assessment and research in support of its decision-making.

31.5.2021 | On 31 May, the Prime Minister’s Office opened a call for applications for EUR 1,810,000 in funding for analysis, assessment and research activities. Funding is available for research on eleven different themes that support the Government in cross-sectoral preparation and decision-making.

2.2.2021 | A comprehensive international evaluation of the activities of the Academy of Finland will commence. Using international expertise, the evaluation aims to produce an overall picture of the activities of the Academy of Finland and to propose ways to improve its impact, activities and structures.

28.5.2021 | According to an evaluation published on 28 May 2021, Finland’s National Emergency Supply Agency (NESA) is an effective, flexible and agile agency, but due to changes in the operating environment, its regulation, structures and processes need to be reformed. A stakeholder survey carried out to support the evaluation shows that the operators involved in the security of supply consider the system to be working very well.

19.5.2021 | The Prime Minister’s Office will continue the Behavioural Advisory project launched in October 2020, which experiments in practice with the application of behavioural data in managing the COVID-19 crisis. The aim of the follow-up project is to strengthen the capacity of the central government to apply behavioural data more extensively in different policy areas.

11.12.2020 | This year’s FinnSight day focused on the Government report on the future, in which the Government and Parliament discuss issues affecting the future of Finland. In line with the Government report on the Future, the theme of the FinnSight 2020 foresight forum held on 10 December was the Finland of future generations. The FinnSight 2020 event is part of the preparations for the Government report on the future and Finland’s national foresight activities.

14.8.2020 | On 14 August 2020, Teollisuuden voima Plc submitted an environmental impact assessment programme (EIA programme) on the final disposal of very low-level nuclear waste in the Olkiluoto nuclear power plant area in Eurajoki to the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment. The alternatives are constructing a new near-surface disposal facility or expanding the deep geological repository currently in use.

14.2.2020 | An international panel has carried out an evaluation of the activities of the VATT Institute for Economic Research. The panel submitted its report to the Ministry of Finance on Friday 14 February.
