  2. 15.1.2026 | Veikkaus Oy’s monopoly on running gambling games will end. Under the new Gambling Act, the running of betting games, online slot and casino games, and online money bingo will be opened to competition under a licensing system. In its session on 15 January, the Government proposed that the President of the Republic approve the Gambling Act on 16 January. Most provisions of the new act will enter into force on 1 July 2027.

  17. 28.11.2025 | On 27 November 2025, the European Commission published a new Bioeconomy Strategy, which replaces the strategy from 2018. The strategy provides a framework for a competitive and sustainable EU bioeconomy, with the objective of reducing dependency on fossil raw materials and raising the degree of processing and value added of EU bio-based products. The core of the strategy is to boost the development of bio-based products and to accelerate their wide-spread introduction.

  18. 12.1.2026 | In order to promote the capture of biogenic carbon dioxide, the Government has decided to grant investment aid totalling EUR 90 million for the construction of capture capacity. The Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment has now launched a call for applications for the competitive bidding process for the investment aid.   19. 13.5.2024 | The first prize in the competition for a grave memorial honouring President Martti Ahtisaari has been awarded to Harri Pakarinen for his design Blessed. The competition was of a high artistic standard, and the 171 entries that were approved were highly diverse. Prizes were awarded to three entries and one received a commendation.

  20. 23.10.2025 | The electricity tax on power used in data centres will move from the lower electricity tax category II to the general category I as of 1 July 2026. The general category tax is 2.24 cents per kilowatt-hour, compared to 0.05 cents in the lower category. This means the change will increase the electricity tax on data centres by 2.19 cents per kilowatt-hour. The reform will raise central government electricity tax revenue by EUR 47 million annually at 2026 levels.
