15.5.2026 | The Ministry of the Interior’s rescue authorities issued an emergency warning about a potential drone sighting in Uusimaa on 15 May 2026 shortly before 4.00. The authorities have now announced, through an emergency warning, that the danger has passed. When an emergency warning is issued, it is essential to follow the instructions of the authorities.

1.7.2025 | The Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment has appointed a working group of public officials to assess legislation concerning plants handling dangerous chemicals and explosives which are important for national defence. Due to the changed security environment in Finland, the processing of licence applications, disclosure obligations and data processing of these plants will be evaluated.

30.6.2026 | The Ministry of the Interior invites views on a draft government proposal to amend the Act on Emergency Warnings. The amendments would make the legislative changes required to introduce a cell broadcast public warning system. The consultation round closes on 14 July 2026.

27.5.2024 | The Ministry of Transport and Communications requests comments on the draft government proposal for an act amending the Act on the Finnish Meteorological Institute and for an Act amending the Act on the Defence Forces. The amendments would enable the establishment of a space situational awareness centre in Finland. The deadline for submitting comments is 30 June 2024.

19.4.2024 | EU foreign ministers will convene in Luxembourg on 22 April. Minister for Foreign Affairs Elina Valtonen will represent Finland at the meeting.

27.8.2026 | On 27 August, the Government submitted to Parliament a proposal to amend the Act on Emergency Warnings. The amendments would make the legislative changes needed for introducing a public warning system based on cell broadcast technology. The amendments are scheduled to enter into force on 1 November 2026.

3.5.2023 | On 3 May 2023, a steering group appointed by the Ministry of Transport and Communications to examine the possible establishment of a Finnish space situational awareness centre issued a report recommending that the centre be established. It could be started by 2026.

22.8.2021 | Intensive efforts are under way to evacuate Finns and Afghans who have been working for the Finnish Government from Afghanistan. Around ten people were evacuated from Kabul on Saturday, and a group of 52 have boarded evacuation flights so far on Sunday. This brings the total number of evacuees to 110 at present. The evacuees are Finnish citizens or permanent residents of Finland, along with other persons who have been working for Finland, the EU and NATO, together with their families.

25.5.2026 | At a roundtable event on 25 May 2026, representatives of wellbeing services counties, cities and labour market organisations developed a shared understanding of how to address drone-related threats and communicate about them to the public. The purpose of the discussion was to strengthen the resilience of society and increase understanding of what has already been done to ensure preparedness and how it can be further developed through cooperation.

1.6.2026 | A new emergency warning system complementing the existing systems will be built in Finland by the end of October 2026. The new FI-Alert system will complement the current emergency warning system by delivering faster and more accurately targeted regional warnings directly to mobile phones. The Ministry of the Interior and Erillisverkot Group signed an agreement on implementing the FI-Alert system on 28 May 2026.

10.2.2022 | The Ministry of the Interior has completed an investigation into a statutory amendment that would allow a residence permit and alien’s passport to be issued to applicants whose lack of a travel document is the sole impediment to granting the permit. The same project also investigated other potential solutions to address the situation of individuals who have remained in Finland for an extended period with no right of residence.

9.6.2026 | Minister of Defence Antti Häkkänen held a speech at the meeting of the Council of Europe’s Committee on Social Inclusion and Human Dignity in Kouvola on 9 June 2026.

9.6.2026 | Legislative amendments to the Aliens Act will make the provisions on removal from the country and entry bans more effective. The enforcement of deportation decisions will be expedited. In addition, an entry ban may in future be imposed in advance if a person is considered a serious danger to security. The President of the Republic approved the amendments on Tuesday 9 June. They will enter into force on 12 June.

7.12.2022 | EU home affairs ministers will gather in Brussels on Thursday 8 December for a meeting of the Justice and Home Affairs Council. Minister of the Interior Krista Mikkonen will represent Finland at the meeting. The ministers will discuss topics including the overall state of the Schengen area and Russia’s aggression against Ukraine.
