28.5.2026 | A fixed-term employment contract may be concluded without a justified reason in cases concerning the first employment relationship between an employer and an employee or if at least five years have elapsed since the previous employment relationship between them. A fixed-term employment relationship could be concluded for a maximum of one year without a justified reason.

15.1.2026 | Under the proposal, a fixed-term employment contract could be concluded without a justified reason for a maximum of one year if certain conditions are met. The Government also proposes to shorten the notice period for lay-offs and to limit the employer’s obligation to re-employ dismissed employees. The proposal for the amendments was submitted to Parliament on 15 January 2026.

8.7.2026 | The Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment is inviting views on a draft act that would transpose into national law the EU Directive on improving working conditions in platform work. The public consultation will be open from 8 July to 28 August 2026. The draft act was prepared by a tripartite working group, which did not reach a unanimous position.

29.9.2025 | On Thursday 2 October, Minister of Employment Matias Marttinen will visit Uusikaupunki, where Valmet Automotive has announced that it will initiate change negotiations concerning the Uusikaupunki car factory. Possible solutions that support employment and are suitable for the situation will be sought together with Valmet Automotive and regional actors.

24.2.2025 | According to the Government Programme, the regulation concerning the grounds for terminating employment related to the employee will be amended so that, in future, a proper reason would be sufficient for terminating an employment contract. 11.2.2026 | Minister of Economic Affairs Sakari Puisto is pleased with the icebreaker agreement between the United States Coast Guard and the Helsinki shipyard published today. The Coast Guard and the Rauma shipyard announced their agreement already on 29 December 2025. With the agreements, the building of four icebreakers will begin at the shipyards in Helsinki and Rauma.

7.3.2024 | On 7 March 2024, the Finnish Government submitted to Parliament a proposal concerning the implementation of the amendments made to the guidelines of the Maritime Labour Convention of the International Labour Organization in 2022.
