16.6.2026 | The Finnish economy is gradually recovering but is overshadowed by the crisis in the Middle East, higher energy prices and an uncertain economic outlook. Economic growth is boosting general government revenues, but the deficit remains wide according to the Ministry of Finance's economic forecast published on 16 June.

30.4.2026 | Economic recovery in Finland will be further delayed as a result of the crisis in the Middle East. The general government deficit will widen and remain large according to the Economic Forecast published by the Ministry of Finance on 30 April.

30.3.2026 | EU energy ministers will hold an informal video conference on Tuesday 31 March 2026 to formulate a common response to the effects of the Persian Gulf crisis on energy markets. Minister of Climate and the Environment Sari Multala will represent Finland at the meeting.

9.10.2025 | The state and sectors have signed new Energy Efficiency Agreements for 2026–2035. Upon signing the agreements, 169 organisations committed themselves to efficient energy use. Once again, the objective is to have 60 per cent of Finland’s total energy use under the voluntary agreements.

3.4.2025 | The government and different sectors have negotiated new Energy Efficiency Agreements for the period of 2026–2035. The agreements cover business and industry, the property sector and the public sector. They play a key role in fulfilling the binding obligations of the EU Energy Efficiency Directive. Joining the new agreement period will begin in October 2025.

5.10.2022 | The central government will implement an extensive energy saving programme in its premises with the aim to help Finland overcome the current challenging energy situation. The Ministerial working group on developing the digital transformation, the data economy and public administration discussed the matter on 5 October. Minister of Local Government Sirpa Paatero fully took over as chair of the ministerial working group for the remainder of the government term.

10.10.2022 | The national energy saving campaign, ‘Down a degree’, starts today. Russia’s attack on Ukraine has caused a difficult energy situation in all of Europe. Saving energy is a quick and effective way to relieve the energy crisis and save money.  

30.5.2024 | EU Energy Ministers will meet in Brussels on May 30. The aim is to adopt the Council conclusions on promoting sustainable electricity network infrastructure. The ministers will also discuss the future of the REPowerEU plan and the status of the Green Deal. Finland will be represented at the meeting by Minister of Climate and the Environment Kai Mykkänen.

1.10.2024 | In 2017–2023 companies, municipalities and joint municipal authorities that had joined the energy efficiency agreements took a total of 27,000 measures through which they have improved the efficiency of their annual energy consumption by about 14.8 TWh. These energy efficiency measures reduce Finland’s annual carbon dioxide emissions by more than three million tonnes.

8.12.2023 | The Council of the European Union, European Parliament and European Commission reached a provisional agreement on the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD). The aim of the directive is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from buildings and their energy consumption.

11.4.2024 | Nuclear energy is produced for good reasons. In the early days of January, the coldest winter conditions for decades raised electricity consumption in Finland to a maximum of 15 gigawatts, which is the biggest quantity for nearly a decade. There was indeed demand for electricity produced with nuclear energy. The more challenging energy market situation has increased support for the use of nuclear energy across Europe.

16.2.2024 | The Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment has outlined the priorities for energy aid in 2024. Energy aid promotes the production of renewable energy, renewable hydrogen and fuels refined from it, energy saving or more efficient production or use of energy, utilisation of waste heat or the transition towards a low-carbon energy system in other ways.

18.11.2022 | Nearly 90 per cent of the respondents in the November round of the Citizens’ Pulse survey commissioned by the Government said they had taken some measures to save energy.

3.10.2023 | Between 2017 and 2022, companies and municipalities that have signed energy efficiency agreements introduced nearly 25,000 different energy efficiency measures. The measures saved 12.5 terawatt hours of energy, which corresponds to the annual energy use of 625,000 electrically heated single-family houses.

23.6.2022 | The EU energy ministers will meet at a Council meeting in Luxembourg on 27 June 2022. They aim to reach a general approach on the tightening of the Energy Efficiency Directive and the Renewable Energy Directive as part of the Fit for 55 package. Minister of Economic Affairs Mika Lintilä will represent Finland at the meeting.

8.9.2022 | The EU energy ministers will meet for an extraordinary meeting of the Energy Council in Brussels on Friday 9 September 2022. The meeting will focus on energy prices and preparations for the coming winter.

4.1.2024 | The price of exchange electricity – the spot price of electricity sold on the power exchange – will rise to record levels on Friday 5 January 2024. Even at its lowest, the hourly changing price of electricity, including the Finnish value added tax, will be more than a euro per kilowatt-hour (kWh) between 6.00 and 21.00 and more than two euros between 15.00 and 20.00.

25.7.2022 | The EU energy ministers will meet for an extraordinary meeting of the Energy Council in Brussels on Tuesday 26 July 2022. The meeting will focus on the security of energy supply in the EU, particularly with regard to gas, and on preparing for the coming winter by reducing gas consumption.

4.8.2023 | Before Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, approximately one third of the energy used in Finland was imported from Russia. That share was reduced almost to zero in a few months, and the energy war launched by Russia increased consumer prices remarkably. As the energy markets have changed, it is the time to look how Russian energy was replaced and what more permanent effects trade changes will have.

25.1.2022 | With the measures implemented in 2017–2020, nearly 600 companies and 112 municipalities and joint municipal authorities that have signed voluntary energy efficiency agreements were able to cut energy use by a total of 8.9 terawatt hours (TWh) annually at the end of 2020. The savings achieved equal the annual energy use of nearly 450,000 electrically heated single-family houses.
