14.5.2026 | On 14 May, 41 OSCE participating States, including Finland, invoked the Moscow Mechanism to investigate Russia’s indoctrination and militarisation of Ukrainian children. The mechanism was invoked in close cooperation with Ukraine.

14.5.2026 | The Council of Europe's annual session of the Ministers for Foreign Affairs will be held on 14–15 May in Chișinău, Moldova. Finland will be represented at the meeting by Secretary of State Pasi Rajala.

13.5.2026 | On 13 May 2026, the Government adopted a National Security Concept as a government resolution. The concept defines Finland’s key national security interests and focuses on measures to counter the most serious threats.

19.11.2025 | A report of the Independent International Panel on Arbitrary detention in State-to-State Relations was published in New York on 28 October. Ambassador Marja Lehto served as the Vice-Chair of the Panel.

21.11.2024 | International protection will be made temporary in nature and the length of permits will be shortened to the minimum allowed by EU law. Committing offences and endangering national security will lead to the refusal or end of protection status. The Government submitted the amendments to the Aliens Act for approval on Thursday 21 November. The President of the Republic is to approve the amendments on Friday. The amendments will enter into force on 2 January 2025.

25.6.2025 | The European Council on 26 June in Brussels will focus on topical international events. Items on the agenda at the meeting of the EU heads of state or government will include support for Ukraine, growing tensions in the Middle East, European defence and security, and strengthening the EU’s competitiveness. Prime Minister Petteri Orpo will represent Finland at the meeting.

8.12.2025 | This year, the International Gender Equality Prize was awarded to Masha Foundation , a Ukrainian public organisation which carries out significant work to help Ukrainian women overcome the psychological consequences of war and other violence.

11.12.2025 | A round table discussion on port safety and security took place on 11 December 2025 at the invitation of Minister of Transport and Communications Lulu Ranne and Minister of the Interior Mari Rantanen. The meeting focussed on the security situation in Finnish ports and how they might be impacted by changes taking place in the operating environment.

28.6.2024 | The Ministry of the Interior has set up a project to prepare legislative amendments on the use of air carriers’ passenger name record (PNR) data in the prevention of terrorist offences and serious crime.

11.2.2026 | The Ministry for Foreign Affairs and the Finnish missions abroad provided consular services to approximately 245,000 customers in 2025. In addition, the Ministry’s 24/7 service was contacted around 6,700 times over the course of the year.

20.2.2024 | The Ministry of the Interior has sent out for comments a proposal for a legislative amendment that would shorten the length of international protection permits to the minimum allowed by the Qualification Directive. The deadline for submitting comments is 12 March 2024.

19.7.2023 | EU home affairs ministers will gather in Logroño in Spain on 20 July for an informal meeting of the Justice and Home Affairs Council. The agenda will include the fight against organised crime, the situation in Ukraine and migration. Finland will be represented by Minister of the Interior Mari Rantanen.

30.1.2025 | The Finnish Government submitted to Parliament a Union communication on a cooperation agreement between the European Union and the International Criminal Police Organisation (Interpol). The negotiations for the agreement are expected to conclude by the end of this year.

5.12.2023 | Ambassador Päivi Kaukoranta from Finland was elected as President of the Assembly of States Parties to the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court (ICC) for a mandate from 2024 to 2026.

25.1.2023 | EU home affairs ministers will gather in Stockholm on 26 January for an informal meeting of the Justice and Home Affairs Council. Minister of the Interior Krista Mikkonen will represent Finland at the meeting. The home affairs ministers will discuss the fight against organised crime and, in particular, the right of law enforcement and judicial authorities to access digital information and evidence.

16.5.2023 | The Council of Europe has long been monitoring Russia’s alarming situation of human rights, democracy and the rule of law. For many years, the Council tried to exert influence over Russia by keeping the country as a Member and within the jurisdiction of the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR). However, Russia launching a full-scale invasion of Ukraine on 24 February 2022 was the last straw, and the Council decided to expel Russia only three weeks later.

15.2.2023 | As international recruitment becomes increasingly common in the healthcare and social welfare sector, it is important to ensure that employers have sufficient competence to manage recruitment responsibly. Responsibility recommendations prepared to support recruitment promote consideration of ethical aspects and combat risks of labour exploitation.

5.3.2025 | The EU home affairs ministers will gather in Brussels on 5 March for a meeting of the Justice and Home Affairs Council. The topics on the agenda include the state of the critical submarine infrastructure, the management of migration and the fight against drug trafficking and organised crime. Finland will be represented by Minister of the Interior Mari Rantanen.

16.9.2024 | The governments of Finland and Sweden met in Stockholm on Monday 16 September to accelerate and deepen cooperation between the two countries. The joint meeting adopted a declaration which covers cooperation in several key sectors of society.
