18.6.2025 | Senate Properties will begin a major renovation of the National Archives’ main building at Rauhankatu 17 in spring 2026. At the same time, the building will be adapted into a shared workspace for the National Archives, the Institute for the Languages of Finland, the Finnish National Agency for Education, the Accessibility Library Celia, and the Research Council of Finland. These agencies will move into the premises in autumn 2028.

29.2.2024 | The Ministry of Social Affairs and Health is asking for opinions on a proposal that the National Archives of Finland could make a screening decision on the permanent retention of public healthcare patient information.

21.8.2020 | The National Archives will launch a five-year research project in September 2020 on the phases of life of Finns in Russia after the October Revolution of 1917. The project plan is based on an assessment of research needs submitted by the National Archives of Finland to the Prime Minister's Office in January this year.

13.5.2024 | The first prize in the competition for a grave memorial honouring President Martti Ahtisaari has been awarded to Harri Pakarinen for his design Blessed. The competition was of a high artistic standard, and the 171 entries that were approved were highly diverse. Prizes were awarded to three entries and one received a commendation.

25.11.2020 | Finna.fi search services, which brings together Finnish cultural and scientific material, now offers new opportunities for learning. Educational resources are available for use openly and free of charge. Finna is funded by the Ministry of Education and Culture.

9.11.2023 | Former President of the Republic of Finland, Nobel Peace Prize laureate, Ambassador and State Secretary of the Finnish Ministry for Foreign Affairs, Martti Ahtisaari passed away in Helsinki on 16 October 2023 at the age of 86. He was born on 23 June 1937 in Vyborg.

8.2.2019 | On Friday 8 February, the Prime Minister's Office received an archive report prepared by the National Archives of Finland of the involvement of Finnish SS men in the killing of Jews, civilians and prisoners of war in the period 1941–1943.

9.6.2021 | Next year will mark 100 years since the Åland Islands gained autonomy. The autonomy celebrations will take place throughout the centenary year, from 9 June 2021 to 9 June 2022. Self-government is a part of Finnish democracy and gives the Finnish administrative structure its unique and multi-dimensional nature. The Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Finland is a part of the anniversary events.

11.7.2019 | Finland was established as a constitutional democracy one hundred years ago. To celebrate this, Wednesday 17 July has been designated as a national flag day. On the same day, a seminar will be held at the SuomiAreena public debate forum to discuss the meaning of constitutional republic as the cornerstone of the Finnish democracy and society. Keynote speakers at the seminar include Speaker of Parliament Matti Vanhanen, Minister of Finance Mika Lintilä and Minister of Justice Anna-Maja Henriksson.

31.5.2020 | The restrictions put in place to mitigate the COVID-19 epidemic are being phased out gradually and in a controlled manner starting on 1 June. The aim is to curb the epidemic while minimising the adverse impact on people, businesses, society and the exercise of fundamental rights.
