7.8.2025 | Finland is known as a country of responsible use of nuclear energy. Safety comes always first. Responsibility includes ensuring the funds required for nuclear waste management and for the decommissioning of facilities. An extensive legislative reform is, however, required to streamline regulation and licensing. The reform process is also driven by the need to take account of new technologies and the profitability challenges of the sector.

31.1.2025 | In Finland, there is broad recognition of the important role that nuclear energy will also play in the future. There is a willingness to build new capacity, yet the profitability of investments has clearly weakened over the years. What different means could be considered to advance nuclear energy?

3.11.2025 | On 28 October 2025, Finland and Kazakhstan signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on a strategic partnership in the energy sector. The particular areas of cooperation are the promotion of energy and clean technologies, security of energy supply and decarbonisation of electricity and heat production.

18.1.2024 | On Thursday 18 January, the Government appointed Petteri Tiippana to serve as Director General of the Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority (STUK), starting on 1 February 2024. The appointment is for a fixed term until 31 January 2029.

31.8.2023 | This year, more than 40 per cent of Finnish electricity is produced with nuclear energy. In the future, nuclear energy can also be produced in smaller units and used for new purposes, such as heating industry and buildings. A new outlook for the sector's activities requires a new approach also in the administration.

4.8.2023 | Before Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, approximately one third of the energy used in Finland was imported from Russia. That share was reduced almost to zero in a few months, and the energy war launched by Russia increased consumer prices remarkably. As the energy markets have changed, it is the time to look how Russian energy was replaced and what more permanent effects trade changes will have.

15.3.2023 | Finland has been one of the leading providers of assistance to Ukraine's energy sector during the war. On Tuesday 14 March, the latest energy sector assistance, a smart solar power system, was sent from Finland to Ukraine.

7.6.2022 | “Due to the ongoing war in Ukraine, we are in a historical situation where we have to find energy solutions independent of the imports from Russia. Together with climate change, this poses an enormous challenge. 29.12.2022 | Finland has sent more energy sector supplies and hospital supplies to Ukraine. Last week, Finland also delivered school furniture for the first time. This year, Finland has delivered a total of 55 trucks of civilian material assistance to Ukraine. New assistance packages are being prepared, among other things, for the energy sector.

24.11.2020 | Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Rafael Mariano Grossi will visit Finland on 25–26 November 2020. On Wednesday, he will meet President of the Republic Sauli Niinistö and Minister of Economic Affairs Mika Lintilä and discuss with Minister for Foreign Affairs Pekka Haavisto and Minister for Development and Foreign Trade Ville Skinnari. On Thursday, Mr Grossi will visit Eurajoki.

18.10.2019 | On 18 October 2019, the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment appointment a working group to prepare an overall reform of the Nuclear Energy Act. The working group, chaired by Liisa Heikinheimo, Head of the Fuels and Nuclear Energy Unit, was appointed for a term from 21 October 2019 to 18 June 2020.

15.9.2025 | Minister of the Environment and Climate Sari Multala will take part in the International Atomic Energy Agency’s (IAEA) General Conference in Vienna on 15–16 September 2025. On Monday, she will deliver Finland’s national statement to the plenary.
