At the same time, the way cities as an object of policy are being developed is too fragmented and continues to focus on administrative sectors and disconnected policy instruments. 26.1.2026 | The Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment appointed a working group to prepare a programme to prevent segregation. The working group will identify measures to reduce segregation. The programme is due to be completed by the end of 2026.

11.2.2022 | The new EU regional and structural policy programming period will further accelerate the development of urban innovation ecosystems and launch national innovation and skills network activity. On 10 February 2022, the Government allocated a total of approximately EUR 21.6 million of Innovation and Skills in Finland programme funding for the implementation of ecosystem agreements and approximately EUR 6.9 million for the launch of a national innovation and skills network in 2022.

8.4.2026 | The Ministry of the Interior will allocate around EUR 44 million in EU funding to projects on border management, crime prevention and migration. The projects will improve the capabilities of security authorities, develop information systems, and secure resources for the authorities to manage migration. The funding will be granted from the EU Home Affairs Funds, under the autumn 2025 call for proposals.

Published on 23 September 2020, the National Urban Strategy 2020–2030 represents the shared view of central government and cities themselves on the key trends for this decade and how urban policy can be shaped in partnership between the Government and the cities.

20.11.2025 | On 21 November, the Government submitted to Parliament its proposal to amend the 2026 budget. New transport infrastructure projects will be launched and rail and transport links will be improved throughout Finland.

12.3.2026 | On 12 March 2026, the European Court of Human Rights issued a decision in a case concerning the expropriation of real property and the amount of compensation paid for expropriation. The Court unanimously declared the applicants’ complaint under Article 1 (protection of property) of Protocol No. 1 to the European Convention on Human Rights inadmissible as manifestly ill-founded.
