19.12.2025 | In a meeting that began on Thursday 18 December, the EU leaders reached an agreement on significant additional funding for Ukraine. In line with the agreement, the European Council will provide a EUR 90 billion loan to Ukraine for 2026 and 2027.

14.10.2024 | The Government discussed the recommendations, decisions and conclusions issued to Finland by the international human rights monitoring bodies on 3 October. The discussion was held as part of the implementation of the Government's equality statement. Based on the discussion, the State Secretaries of the parties in Government decided on further measures related to the recommendations.

1.4.2025 | Finland holds the Chairpersonship of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) in 2025. Minister for Foreign Affairs Elina Valtonen has appointed Prof. Dr Wolfgang Palaver as Personal Representative of the OSCE Chairperson-in-Office on Combating Discrimination.

25.1.2024 | On 23 January, the Prime Minister’s Office decided that Finland would begin observing Holocaust Remembrance Day in line with international practices as of 27 January 2024. The day had previously been designated in Finnish as Vainojen uhrien muistopäivä, or Memorial Day for Victims of Persecution.

7.10.2019 | The EU justice ministers discussed, among other things, the development of anti-corruption measures and the strengthening of fundamental rights at their meeting on 7 October 2019.

16.12.2019 | Minister of European Affairs and Ownership Steering Tytti Tuppurainen and EU ambassadors in EU and candidate countries met today in Helsinki to discuss how to combat hate speech, hate crime and antisemitism. The discussions clearly highlighted how these phenomena are problems across Europe. European cooperation and the sharing of good practices are of paramount importance in the fight against these phenomena.

4.2.2019 | A communications campaign aiming to combat hate speech will be launched on 4 February during Media Literacy Week. The campaign is part of the Against Hate project coordinated by the Ministry of Justice. The campaign aims to increase internet users’ awareness of what kinds of content constitute punishable hate speech. The campaign also seeks to encourage people to report punishable hate speech to the police.

17.5.2019 | Hate speech is such a serious problem that the Government must define policies for its eradication. A working group that examined the phenomenon proposes that an action plan against hate speech be drawn up, a centre of expertise be established, and the relevant legislation be amended. Hate speech has harmful consequences not only for the victim but also for democratic society as a whole, the rule of law, and freedom of expression.
