18.2.2026 | Minister for Foreign Trade and Development Ville Tavio will attend an informal meeting of EU trade ministers in Nicosia, Cyprus, on 19–20 February. Topics on the meeting agenda include the 14th WTO Ministerial Conference and the EU’s trade relations with China. The ministers will also be briefed of the EU’s ongoing trade agreement negotiations with various trading partners.

27.1.2026 | Prime Minister Petteri Orpo is in China for an official visit from 24 to 29 January. On Tuesday 27 January, Prime Minister Orpo met for separate discussions with President Xi Jinping, Prime Minister Li Qiang and Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress Zhao Leji. In all three discussions, Prime Minister Orpo highlighted Finland’s and Europe’s support for Ukraine, EU-China relations and a variety of bilateral issues, including increasing Finland’s exports to China.

27.1.2026 | Finland and China signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on energy cooperation in Beijing on 27 January 2026. The areas of cooperation focus in particular on clean energy, smart energy systems and energy innovation.

On 7.11.25, the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment appointed a working group to consider solutions to problems related to low-priced imports. The task of the working group is to identify all the national and EU-level solutions that can be used to address the problems caused by low-priced imports. In addition to surveying the means, a proposal will be made on the primary follow-up measures.

29.10.2025 | The meeting of the China–Finland energy cooperation working group was held on 23 October 2025 in Suzhou, China, in cooperation with the National Energy Administration of China (NEA) and Finland’s Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment. Finland was represented by Riku Huttunen, Director General of the Ministry’s Energy Department.

12.12.2025 | EU foreign ministers will convene for a meeting of the EU Foreign Affairs Council in Brussels on 15 December. Minister for Foreign Affairs Elina Valtonen will represent Finland at the meeting.

21.11.2025 | The EU trade ministers will convene for a meeting of the Foreign Affairs Council in Brussels on 24 November to discuss the Union’s trade relations with the United States and China. The ministers will also take stock of the EU’s ongoing bilateral trade negotiations. The participation of Minister Tavio in the meeting has been cancelled. Finland will be represented by Finland’s EU Ambassador Jori Arvonen.

19.6.2025 | EU foreign affairs ministers will convene in Brussels on Monday 23 June. Minister for Foreign Affairs Elina Valtonen will represent Finland at the meeting.

22.1.2026 | Prime Minister Petteri Orpo will visit Beijing, China, on 25–28 January. On Tuesday 27 January, Prime Minister Orpo will meet with President of China Xi Jinping, Prime Minister Li Qiang, who is hosting the official visit, and Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress Zhao Leji. The purpose of the visit is to continue dialogue with the Chinese leadership and to promote business opportunities for Finland in China.

29.10.2024 | On 29 October, Minister of the Environment and Climate Change Kai Mykkänen signed two Memorandums of Understanding promoting Finland–China cooperation on the environment and the circular economy.

24.6.2024 | Minister of Economic Affairs Wille Rydman will visit China on 25–28 June 2024. The main purpose of the visit is to promote Finnish companies that are engaged in business and cooperation in China. Rydman will meet the Chinese Minister of Commerce Wang Wentao, among others.

1.11.2024 | Minister of Climate and the Environment Kai Mykkänen stresses that, to reach the global targets, China must be more strongly involved in the environmental and climate work.

1.11.2024 | Minister for Foreign Trade and Development Ville Tavio will lead a trade mission to China and the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region on 4–8 November.

25.2.2026 | Security policy topics, which have dominated international coverage on Finland since 2022, continued as the key theme in 2025. The number of news headlines about Finland was lower than the previous year, but President of the Republic Alexander Stubb assumed a significantly more visible role on the international stage. Country brand surveys indicate that Finland’s brand has become more positive, and awareness of Finland has increased since 2024.

19.12.2025 | The Finnish Government has made progress on its objective of doubling food exports by 2031. Business Finland’s foreign operations related to export promotion will be integrated into the structures of the Foreign Service, creating new opportunities to boost food exports through enhanced cooperation between the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry and the Ministry for Foreign Affairs.

23.6.2025 | The EU will block access for Chinese medical device economic operators to public contracts worth EUR 5 million or more. Medical devices originating in China may not represent over 50 per cent of the total value of the contract in tenders submitted by other suppliers.

14.11.2023 | Minister Sari Essayah visited China to promote the business opportunities of Finnish companies and exports. The agenda included the signing of a protocol on the export conditions for poultry meat, and an agreement was reached on starting cooperation on food safety. Minister Essayah also visited a trade fair where Finnish companies showcased their products for the Chinese market.
