15.7.2024 | On 15 July 2024, the Ministry of Transport and Communications published an assessment report on how the electrification of transport could contribute to the flexibility of the Finnish energy system. In accordance with EU requirements, the report describes the current state of the opportunities which the electrification of transport could offer and proposes measures. 

26.10.2023 | Finnish companies apply for EU funding for building recharging points for electric cars in the Baltic States and for hydrogen stations for heavy goods vehicles in Finland and Denmark. The Ministerial Finance Committee endorsed the applications on 26 October 2023.

4.7.2024 | The Government proposes that the President of the Republic approve the new Act on the Distribution of Alternative Fuels for Transport and that the Act enter into force on 15 July 2024.

16.2.2023 | On 16 February, the President of the Republic approved an amendment to the Act on Environmental and Energy Efficiency Requirements for Vehicle and Transport Service Procurements. The Act will enter into force on 20 February. With the health and social services reform, the Act will be amended so that the requirements assigned to municipalities will transfer to the wellbeing services counties, which started operating on 1 January 2023.

13.12.2022 | On 13 December 2022, the Ministry of Transport and Communications published a follow-up report that assesses the networks of recharging and refuelling stations for vehicles running on electricity, gas or hydrogen. It also includes an assessment of the take-up of electric and gas cars. According to the report, the targets set for 2020 have for the most part been achieved. However, the targets set in 2017 were moderate and they were tightened in 2021 in the Roadmap for Fossil-free Transport.

18.8.2023 | In July 2023, the European Union adopted the outcome of the negotiations on the Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Regulation (AFIR).  In the Regulation, there is flexibility in areas that are important for Finland. On 15 August 2023, the Ministry of Transport and Communications decided to launch a legislative project on the matter and start preparations for adopting legislative amendments. 

11.2.2019 | The high purchase prices of electric vehicles and challenges of charging in housing companies are currently slowing down the development of the electric vehicle market and public charging infrastructure and the natural growth of the electric vehicle base. A cost-efficient way to accelerate the market would be to introduce more electric vehicles to the vehicle base, but this will require effective promotion measures in the next few years.

16.4.2024 | Prime Minister Petteri Orpo’s Government has agreed on the General Government Fiscal Plan for 2025–2028. The Government has made decisions that will improve the sustainability of public finances and create conditions for reversing the trend in indebtedness. The decisions aim to safeguard the key factors for future prosperity: employment, security, and knowledge and competence. Fairness has been one of the guiding principles of the decisions.

The Ministry of Transport and Communications invites comments on the roadmap, i.e. the Resolution to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from domestic transport, by 19 February 2021.

15.12.2020 | The purpose of the proposed act is to increase the proportion of low- and zero-emission vehicles in the public sector's procurement of vehicles and transport services. The act will transpose the EU Clean Vehicles Directive into national law. The Ministry of Transport and Communications requests statements on the draft bill by 8 February 2021.

2.6.2022 | The Medium-term Climate Change Policy Plan presents the package of measures by which Finland will halve emissions from the effort-sharing sector by 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality by 2035. The Government approved and gave to Parliament the Report on the Medium-term Climate Change Policy Plan on 2 June 2022.
