5.10.2023 | Last June, an Agreement on the Conservation and Sustainable Use of Marine Biological Diversity of Areas Beyond National Jurisdiction was adopted at the United Nations. The agreement is also known as the BBNJ Agreement (biodiversity beyond national jurisdiction) or, more poetically, as the High Seas Treaty. It is an important milestone in the protection of the oceans. The BBNJ Agreement was opened for signature in September during the high-level week of the UN General Assembly.

28.8.2024 | The status of the Baltic Sea remains predominantly poor. The effects of eutrophication in all sea areas disrupt biodiversity and the functioning of the food network. However, the harmful development may be reversing. Although the change is not substantial from the previous status assessment published in 2018, longer-term monitoring indicates a slight improvement.

16.9.2020 | The Government budget session confirmed that funding for nature conservation will stay at a record high level. Next year the funding targeted to nature conservation will be EUR 100 million higher than in the beginning of the government term. The funds will be used e.g. to implement the habitats protection, restoration and management programme ‘Helmi’ and the Forest Biodiversity Programme for Southern Finland (METSO).

A sustainable blue economy is a fundamental part of the broader European Green Deal, which is indispensable for the future of Europe. Sustainable blue economy is not possible without clean and healthy oceans and seas.

13.11.2025 | With a budget of almost EUR 28 million, the ACWA LIFE project is one of the most significant projects during the history of water resources management in Finland. The eight-year project to be started in the beginning of 2026 will improve the status of waters by enhancing river basin management planning and actions based on this in five areas.

According to the vision for the policy, Finland has global influence and produces solutions to ensure that the use of marine natural resources is sustainable, the status of the marine environment is good, and the impacts of climate change do not exceed the carrying capacity of the oceans.

18.6.2025 | Senate Properties will begin a major renovation of the National Archives’ main building at Rauhankatu 17 in spring 2026. At the same time, the building will be adapted into a shared workspace for the National Archives, the Institute for the Languages of Finland, the Finnish National Agency for Education, the Accessibility Library Celia, and the Research Council of Finland. These agencies will move into the premises in autumn 2028.

10.5.2019 | The Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry has issued a decree on the conservation values of declining and threatened fish. The decree is related to an amendment to the Fishing Act that entered into force on 1 May 2019. Under the amendment, the value of illegal catches of threatened or declining fish species shall be forfeited to the State based on the value of the species in question in connection with fishing offences and violations.

28.11.2025 | Finnish Biodiversity Award 2023–2024 was given to an actor that had done something inspiring to halt biodiversity loss. The winner of the competition was Crowdsorsa mobile game that has already helped fight against invasive alien species in Finland on a total of 4 million square metres. Honourable mentions were awarded to the cities of Kauniainen and Vantaa. The prizes were awarded by Minister of Climate and the Environment Sari Multala.

16.4.2024 | The Government reached an agreement on the future of the network of hospitals and urgent and emergency health services in its spending limits session. It decided that changes would be made to night-time emergency care services in primary healthcare and to specialised healthcare in certain hospitals. The aim is to balance public expenditure and respond to the shortage of healthcare personnel.

7.6.2022 | Finland will publish its National Implementation Plan for the UN Decade of Ocean Research on Wednesday 8 June 2022. The main objective is to support the achievement of UN Sustainable Development Goal 14, which is to conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development.

9.10.2023 | The aim of the EU Biodiversity Strategy is to halt biodiversity loss and set Europe’s biodiversity on a path to recovery by 2030. Representatives from Estonia, Finland, Sweden, Latvia and Lithuania, which are located in the boreal zone, will meet in Finland on 10–12 October for discussions focusing in particular on the national commitments related to the strategy.

9.8.2022 | Prime Minister Sanna Marin will attend the informal summer meeting of Nordic prime ministers in Oslo on Monday 15 August. In connection with their meeting, the prime ministers will also have a joint meeting with Federal Chancellor of Germany Olaf Scholz.
