Compared to its reference countries, such as Sweden, Finland has so far not really known how to make use of immaterial value creation. The creative industries still have a considerable amount of untapped potential for economic growth in Finland.

5.12.2024 | The Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment and the Ministry of Education and Culture appointed an Advisory Board for the Creative Economy on 3 December 2024 with the aim of promoting the growth and internationalisation of Finland’s creative industries.

18.10.2022 | This study covered the economic contribution of copyright or copyright industries from 2016 to 2020 in Finland. The relative contribution of all copyright industries has slightly increased during the years under examination; while in 2016 this contribution was 5.44 percent, the respective figure for 2020 was 5.69 percent.

27.11.2025 | Minister of Science and Culture Mari-Leena Talvitie will visit New York from 1 to 4 December to strengthen partnerships between Finland and the United States in culture and the creative industries, with a special focus on visual arts.

5.12.2025 | Finland’s national soundscape Ääniä has received recognition in a prestigious place-branding competition in London. The work, composed by Lauri Porra, was honoured in the Best Use of Design category assessing strategic country branding initiatives. The soundscape is published on music streaming platforms on 5 December 2025, just ahead of Finland’s Independence Day.

18.9.2025 | At its meeting on 16 September, Prime Minister Petteri Orpo lead the Research and Innovation Council in discussions on the implementation of national policies for the use of R&D funding. The Research and Innovation Council was briefed by the Research Council of Finland and Business Finland as well as two organisations that are implementing significant national R&D projects.

16.12.2022 | Development projects promoting the recovery of tourism industry in the regions have supported the capacity of regions to cope with the crisis caused by the coronavirus pandemic. In spring 2022, the Regional Council of Southwest Finland, the Regional Council of South Savo and the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment launched an external evaluation, which examined the implementation of the projects and the impacts of funding. Owal Group Oy conducted the evaluation.

28.11.2025 | Finnish Biodiversity Award 2023–2024 was given to an actor that had done something inspiring to halt biodiversity loss. The winner of the competition was Crowdsorsa mobile game that has already helped fight against invasive alien species in Finland on a total of 4 million square metres. Honourable mentions were awarded to the cities of Kauniainen and Vantaa. The prizes were awarded by Minister of Climate and the Environment Sari Multala.

9.11.2023 | Minister of Science and Culture Sari Multala has launched a report on cultural policy. The preparatory work will be carried out with broad-based involvement of the cultural sector. The report is included in the Programme of Prime Minister Petteri Orpo's Government. The Government aims to submit the report to Parliament in autumn 2024.

20.11.2025 | In its meeting on Wednesday 19 November, the parliamentary research, development and innovation (RDI) monitoring group discussed central government funding for research and development (R&D). The monitoring group also received updates on the RDI outlook for businesses from the Confederation of Finnish Industries, the Federation of Finnish Technology Industries, the Federation of Finnish Enterprises and IQM Finland.

18.11.2020 | The EU ministers responsible for competitiveness will discuss the future of European industrial policy at an informal video meeting on 19 November 2020. The three key themes of reform are digitalisation, carbon reduction and capacity to change. Minister of Economic Affairs Mika Lintilä will represent Finland at the meeting.

9.1.2026 | The Research and Innovation Council has outlined five national strategic choices for research, development and innovation (RDI) policy and activities with a view to boosting sustainable growth and promoting economic and societal renewal while strengthening comprehensive security. The Research and Innovation Council published a report on the strategic choices on 9 January.
