18.6.2025 | In its meeting on Wednesday 18 June, the Ministerial Committee on European Union Affairs outlined Finland’s positions the EU single market strategy and the proposal for a handling fee for goods ordered from outside the EU. The Ministerial Committee also discussed Finland’s positions on the 18th sanctions package currently under preparation and the review of the EU Emissions Trading Directive.

3.8.2023 | A reform of the EU Customs Union would simplify customs processes and modernise customs procedures. The Finnish Government welcomes the proposed reform in general terms.

19.12.2024 | The Government proposes that the President of the Republic approve the Act on the Exchange of Information between the Law Enforcement Authorities of Member States of the European Union and certain related acts and that they enter into force on 20 December 2024. The new Act aims to improve the exchange of information between EU Member States for the purpose of combating crime.

24.1.2023 | The EU’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism aims to prevent carbon leakage, where greenhouse gas emissions are transferred to countries outside the Union through production, and at the same time to encourage non-EU manufacturers to reduce their emissions. The Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment has appointed a working group to prepare the implementation of the mechanism in Finland.

4.6.2021 | According to the Working Life Barometer 2020 published by the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment on 4 June 2021, the coronavirus pandemic had little effect on the physical and mental strain of work or work ability among all wage and salary earners. The level of stress or work exhaustion experienced also did not change significantly from 2019. However, there were clear differences between groups.

30.12.2020 | The Act on the placing on the market of conflict minerals and their ores will improve the transparency of supply chains. The Act will bring Finland’s conflict minerals regime into line with EU regulations. The Government submitted the Act for approval by the President of the Republic on 30 December 2020. The Act will enter into force at the beginning of 2020.

27.1.2020 | The UK will withdraw from the EU when the EU–UK withdrawal agreement enters into force on 1 February 2020. The withdrawal agreement dismantles all cooperation based on the UK’s EU membership in an orderly manner and provides for a transition period until the end of 2020, during which the relationship between the EU and the UK will continue under the current EU rules.

5.7.2019 | At its meeting on July 5, the Ministerial Committee on European Union Affairs discussed ways to improve military mobility in the European Union and outlined Finland’s position for the upcoming Council meetings. Improving military mobility goes hand in hand with enhancing stability and security in Europe. Finland considers that the EU has a key role to play with regard to several aspects of military mobility, and is in favour of its further development.
