15.4.2026 | Kuopion Energia Oy has submitted to the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment an environmental impact assessment (EIA) programme concerning its plan to build a small nuclear power plant in Kuopio for district heating production. The EIA programme is a plan prepared by the party responsible for the project that details the necessary analyses and organisation of the environmental impact assessment procedure.

24.3.2026 | Finland has joined the US-led Foundational Infrastructure for Responsible Use of Small Modular Reactor Technology (FIRST) programme as a contributing partner. Led by the State Department’s Bureau of Arms Control and Nonproliferation (ACN), FIRST harnesses the power of the nuclear industry to expedite responsible nuclear reactor deployment worldwide.

12.2.2026 | “Today we are creating a foundation for the future to develop an energy system that can meet the demands of a new era. This plant is a concrete result of purposeful research and planning,” said Minister of Climate and the Environment Sari Multala at the groundbreaking ceremony for Steady Energy Oy’s small nuclear pilot plant in Salmisaari, Helsinki on 12 February 2026.

29.10.2025 | The meeting of the China–Finland energy cooperation working group was held on 23 October 2025 in Suzhou, China, in cooperation with the National Energy Administration of China (NEA) and Finland’s Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment. Finland was represented by Riku Huttunen, Director General of the Ministry’s Energy Department.

18.9.2025 | The OECD’s Nuclear Energy Agency (NEA) and the Government of South Korea will organise a ministerial meeting in Paris on 18–19 September 2025. The Roadmaps to New Nuclear meeting aims to strengthen cooperation between governments and industry to boost the role of nuclear power in providing clean energy and securing energy supply. Finland will be represented by Mika Nykänen, State Secretary to Minister of Climate and the Environment Sari Multala.

23.10.2025 | The amendment to the Electricity Market Act will promote the integration of the increasing electricity generation and growing consumption loads into the main grid and high-voltage distribution network. The Government submitted the Act to the President of the Republic for approval on 23 October 2025. The Act will enter into force on 1 January 2026.

17.10.2025 | EU energy ministers will meet in Luxembourg on 20 October 2025. In the meeting, the aim is to approve the Council's general approach on the RePowerEU regulation to gradually phase out natural gas imports from Russia. The other main item on the agenda is to discuss the role of electrification as a driver of the EU’s competitive and clean transition. Finland will be represented at the meeting by the Minister of Climate and the Environment Sari Multala.

26.8.2025 | Finland will take part in the Clean Energy Ministerial (CEM16) and Mission Innovation (MI-10) meetings held in Busan, South Korea, on 25–27 August 2025. Finland is represented by Mika Nykänen, State Secretary to Minister of Climate and the Environment Sari Multala, supported by a small expert delegation.

14.10.2024 | The Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment has granted a total of EUR 44,546,484 in investment aid to 12 projects under the national Recovery and Resilience Plan (RRP). Moreover, by a decision supported by the Ministerial Finance Committee on 3 October, EUR 28,048,200 was granted to Nordic Ren-Gas Oy for a large demonstration project on new energy technology.

25.3.2026 | A study describing the alternatives and costs of nuclear energy promotion as well as its effects on the electricity market has been published. The report commissioned by the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment and produced by AFRY Management Consulting Oy was submitted to Minister of Climate and the Environment Sari Multala on 25 March 2026.

14.6.2024 | On 14 June 2024, the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment granted to nine different projects a total of EUR 46.4 million in RRF energy investment aid under the Sustainable Growth Programme for Finland. Of the aid, EUR 24,553,932 will be allocated to three clean transition investments (REPowerEU) and EUR 21,864,440 to six energy infrastructure projects.

22.12.2023 | The Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment has granted approximately EUR 30.9 million in energy investment aid under Finland’s Recovery and Resilience Plan to 12 projects related to energy infrastructure and the electrification and decarbonisation of industrial processes. Minister of Climate and the Environment Kai Mykkänen signed the aid decisions on 19 December 2023.

26.9.2024 | The Government’s aim is to create clean economic growth in Finland and replace pollution-generating solutions around the world through technology exports. The Government will boost the work on the positive climate handprint together with business and industry.

15.4.2024 | The call for applications on investment aid for energy infrastructure projects under Finland’s Recovery and Resilience Plan (RRP) has been opened. Applications will be accepted until the 15th of May 2024. The aid may be granted to companies and corporations for projects, where eligible costs exceed EUR 5 million. The investment aid available for projects is approximately EUR 35 million.

13.10.2023 | The third application round for the RRF energy investment aid under the Sustainable Growth Programme for Finland will take place from 13th of October to 13th of November 2023. Funding is available for the electrification and decarbonisation of industrial processes (P1C2I2.)

31.8.2023 | This year, more than 40 per cent of Finnish electricity is produced with nuclear energy. In the future, nuclear energy can also be produced in smaller units and used for new purposes, such as heating industry and buildings. A new outlook for the sector's activities requires a new approach also in the administration.

8.12.2022 | Finland will grant EUR 4.5 million in additional support to help Ukraine’s energy sector. The support will be used to address acute energy needs in schools, early education centres and hospitals and to develop the country’s energy efficiency in the longer term.

16.12.2022 | The Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment has granted a total of EUR 119,196,068 to 16 clean energy projects under Finland’s Recovery and Resilience Plan.

2.7.2021 | The Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment has adopted new decisions concerning investment aid for projects that rapidly phase out the use of coal energy. Three projects in Espoo, Kirkkonummi and Vaasa received EUR 22,829,282 in aid in total.
