18.11.2025 | The updated list of dual-use items subject to export controls in the EU, adopted by the European Commission in September, entered into force on 15 November 2025.

23.6.2025 | Travelling to the territory of the European Union will change when the European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS) becomes operational in late 2026. The change will also affect people with dual nationality.

10.12.2025 | A new OECD report, prepared at the request of the European Commission, sets out a roadmap to strengthen resilience, competitiveness and security in Finland’s eastern border regions. The report was launched in Helsinki on 10 December.

23.1.2026 | A new NATO accelerator site was inaugurated in Espoo, Finland, on 22 January 2026. Finland’s Minister of Defence Antti Häkkänen gave a speech at the event.

11.2.2026 | The Ministry for Foreign Affairs and the Finnish missions abroad provided consular services to approximately 245,000 customers in 2025. In addition, the Ministry’s 24/7 service was contacted around 6,700 times over the course of the year.

11.12.2025 | Two Finnish companies, Aboa Space Research Oy and SEATOM Technologies, have been selected to join a challenge programme of NATO’s Defence Innovation Accelerator for the North Atlantic (DIANA). More than 3,600 companies, registered in NATO member states, submitted their application, and 150 companies were selected into the programme. They will join the programme in January 2026.

27.3.2025 | The requirements for acquiring Finnish citizenship will be tightened in accordance with the Government Programme. Amendments are proposed to the provisions on the establishment of identity, the integrity requirement and the requirement for sufficient financial resources. The Government submitted a proposal on the matter to Parliament on 27 March.

25.2.2023 | On 25 February 2023, the EU imposed new sanctions as a response to Russia’s continued attacks against Ukraine’s civilian targets and critical infrastructure. The tenth package of sanctions introduces new export bans on critical technology, industrial products and dual-use items. In addition, the EU introduces new measures to prevent the circumvention of sanctions.
