26.3.2026 | On Thursday 26 March, the Economic Council led by Prime Minister Petteri Orpo held a conference on economic growth in an age of disruption.

8.12.2025 | The EU’s Competitiveness Council will be held in Brussels on 8–9 December 2025. Finland will be represented by Minister of Employment Matias Marttinen (internal market and industrial policy matters) and Minister of Economic Affairs Sakari Puisto (research, innovation and space matters).

19.9.2025 | On Friday 19 September, the Ministerial Committee on European Union Affairs discussed the European Commission’s proposal for the next multiannual financial framework, which will serve as the EU’s budget for 2028–2034. The Ministerial Committee on EU Affairs also outlined Finland’s positions on the proposal concerning the European High-Performance Computing (EuroHPC) Joint Undertaking and matters to be discussed at the next meeting of the Agriculture and Fisheries Council.

22.9.2025 | The Ministry of Education and Culture’s proportion of the 2026 budget proposal is EUR 8.9 billion, which is some EUR 4.4 million more than in the 2025 Budget. Despite continued pressure on general government finances, the proposal maintains investment in education, research and competence.

4.7.2025 | The European Commission plans to support the establishment of AI gigafactories across EU Member States. From Finland, technology leader Nokia, along with a business consortium it has assembled, has stepped forward with an expression of interest to bring an AI gigafactory to the country and has taken part in the Commission’s call. The Finnish Government backs the expression of interest submitted by the business consortium led by Nokia.

24.4.2025 | Quantum technology promises an unprecedented leap in computing power, telecommunication security and sensor ability to measure physical quantities. According to Finland’s quantum technology strategy published on 24th April 2025, resources are necessary for the research and development of these technologies and their application and the time to invest in them is now.

11.12.2024 | The European High Performance Computing Joint Undertaking (EuroHPC) has selected the sites that will host the new European AI Factories. The AI factory consists of a supercomputer that provides world-class computing power as well as completely new data sources together with a service centre and talent pool.

23.4.2025 | Prime Minister Petteri Orpo’s Government has agreed on the General Government Fiscal Plan for 2026–2029. The decisions focus on reinforcing the conditions for economic growth and enhancing the security of Finland and the Finnish people. At the same time, the Government will ensure that public finances are sustainable. The growth package will be financed responsibly through measures to increase general government revenue and reduce expenditure.

8.5.2024 | On 8 May 2024, the Government submitted a Union communication to Parliament, proposing that Finland have observer status in the European Digital Infrastructure Consortium for the Alliance for Language Technologies (ALT-EDIC).

22.5.2024 | The EU ministers responsible for competitiveness will meet in Brussels on 23–24 May 2024. Minister of Economic Affairs Wille Rydman will be Finland’s representative at the meetings of the ministers responsible for space, research and innovation on 23 May. Meanwhile, Minister of Employment Arto Satonen will represent Finland at the internal market and industry meetings on 24 May.

17.5.2024 | In its meeting on 17 May, the Ministerial Committee on European Union Affairs discussed the development of the bank crisis management and deposit insurance (CMDI) framework and the rule of law situation in Poland. The Ministerial Committee also outlined Finland’s positions for three upcoming council meetings.

12.12.2022 | Minister for Development Cooperation and Foreign Trade Ville Skinnari will lead a Team Finland trade mission to the State of Texas and visit Washington DC from 12 to 16 December.

26.5.2021 | The EU Competitiveness Council will meet in Brussels on 27 and 28 May 2021. The ministers responsible for the internal market and industrial policy will discuss the EU’s updated industrial strategy and the regulation of digital market and services. The ministers in charge of research and innovation will exchange views on renewing the European Research Area (ERA). The management of space traffic is also on the agenda.

7.6.2019 | Finland will host a new pan-European supercomputer that will help build world-class computing and data services. The EuroHPC supercomputer will provide major benefits for research, industry, knowledge development, employment and competitiveness in Finland and Europe.

15.12.2021 | The objective of the Artificial Intelligence 4.0 programme is that Finnish industry’s assets in 2030 are sustainability, capacity for renewal, technological leadership and solutions that enable increasing the carbon handprint. The interim report compiles the concrete objectives and proposed measures for achieving the artificial intelligence vision for 2030.
