19.10.2023 | EU home affairs ministers will gather in Luxembourg on 19 October for a meeting of the Justice and Home Affairs Council. Topics on the agenda include the fight against human smuggling and radicalisation of minors and its prevention. Over lunch, the ministers will discuss the effects of the situation in Israel and the Middle East on the EU's internal security. Finland will be represented at the meeting by Minister of the Interior Mari Rantanen.

25.1.2024 | The European Commission strives to increase police cooperation in the fight against migrant smuggling and trafficking in human beings. In November, the Commission proposed a regulation that would reinforce Europol's role and increase information sharing between Member States. The Government expressed its position on the Commission's proposal in its communication submitted to Parliament on 25 January 2024.

31.3.2025 | Minister of the Interior Mari Rantanen will attend the Border Security Summit in London on 31 March. The ministerial summit will focus on crime related to people smuggling and organised immigration crime. The aim is to identify the best ways to combat these phenomena.

7.12.2022 | EU home affairs ministers will gather in Brussels on Thursday 8 December for a meeting of the Justice and Home Affairs Council. Minister of the Interior Krista Mikkonen will represent Finland at the meeting. The ministers will discuss topics including the overall state of the Schengen area and Russia’s aggression against Ukraine.

The aim is to prevent trafficking in persons or smuggling of migrants into the territory of the European Union. On 3 February 2022, the Government submitted a communication on a European Union matter, or Union communication, concerning the proposal for a Regulation to Parliament.

22.12.2024 | In a meeting hosted by Prime Minister Petteri Orpo in Saariselkä, Lapland on 21–22 December, a group of EU leaders held extensive discussions on Europe’s security challenges. The North-South Summit brought together perspectives from northern and southern Europe, especially with regard to security and migration.

12.12.2024 | The EU home affairs ministers will gather in Brussels on 12 December for a meeting of the Justice and Home Affairs Council. The topics on the agenda include issues related to border security and responding to migration. Finland will be represented by Minister of the Interior Mari Rantanen.

3.6.2024 | Minister of the Interior Mari Rantanen met Austria's Federal Minister for the Interior in Vienna on Monday. The ministers discussed cooperation between the two countries in migration policy, ways to manage migration, and partnerships with third countries. Minister Rantanen will travel from Vienna to Brussels, where she will participate in the European Civil Protection Forum's high-level panel discussion on EU preparedness.

9.3.2023 | EU home affairs ministers gather in Brussels on 9 March for a meeting of the Justice and Home Affairs Council. Items on the agenda include the monitoring of the implementation of the Action Plans on the Western Balkans and Central Mediterranean migration routes. The European Commission presented both plans at the end of last year. Minister of the Interior Krista Mikkonen will represent Finland at the meeting.

9.3.2023 | The Government has adopted a resolution on a strategy to prevent and combat labour exploitation. The strategy includes long-term objectives to help Finland respond more effectively to the exploitation of foreign labour. The objectives also support cooperation between the authorities and the inclusion of immigrants in the Finnish society.

30.5.2022 | Minister of the Interior Krista Mikkonen will visit Stockholm on 31 May and meet with her colleagues, Minister for Integration and Migration Anders Ygeman and Minister of Justice and Home Affairs Morgan Johansson. 8.7.2022 | The EU home affairs ministers will hold an informal meeting of the Justice and Home Affairs Council on 11 July in Prague. The meeting will be the first during the Czech Presidency of the Council of the European Union. The Ministers will discuss the effects of the war in Ukraine on the EU’s internal security, fight against child sexual abuse, and interoperability between EU information systems in the justice and home affairs sector.

28.4.2022 | Prime Minister Sanna Marin met with Greek Prime Minister Kyriákos Mitsotákis in Athens on Thursday 28 April. In their meeting, the prime ministers discussed Russia’s war of aggression in Ukraine, the changed security situation in Europe, topical EU matters, and relations between Finland and Greece.
