4.11.2025 | On 3 November 2025, the European Commission announced that 61 projects had been selected for funding under the latest Innovation Fund call for net-zero technologies. The projects will receive a total of EUR 2.9 billion in support. Five Finnish projects are among those selected: NotNukeOne, SCOOP, MAGHYC, NEXT HYDROMET and SB-VARKAUS.

28.11.2025 | On 27 November 2025, the European Commission published a new Bioeconomy Strategy, which replaces the strategy from 2018. The strategy provides a framework for a competitive and sustainable EU bioeconomy, with the objective of reducing dependency on fossil raw materials and raising the degree of processing and value added of EU bio-based products. The core of the strategy is to boost the development of bio-based products and to accelerate their wide-spread introduction.

22.6.2022 | A national hydrogen network will be established in Finland. On Wednesday 22 June, the Ministerial Committee on Economic Policy supported expanding the group-level mandate of the wholly state-owned Gasgrid Finland Oy to include hydrogen transmission infrastructure and the development of a related hydrogen market in Finland.

28.11.2025 | With the aim of strengthening Finland’s economic growth, speeding up investments and improving employment, the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment has prepared a growth and employment package in line with the Government’s decisions. The package will be funded by redistributing unused funds from the investment aid programmes in the branch of Government of the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment. The estimated total amount of funds will be EUR 156 million.

15.12.2023 | Hydrogen is the fuel of the stars and makes our life possible. Humanity, however, is still in its infancy in harnessing fusion nuclear power as an energy source, so the role of hydrogen on Earth is different - at least for the moment. Traditionally, it already works as a raw material for many industrial processes, for example oil refining. A new, climate-based need is to utilize clean hydrogen in industrial processes that replace fossil-based production.

9.2.2023 | The Government adopted a resolution on hydrogen on 9 February 2023. In its resolution, the Government describes Finland’s objectives regarding hydrogen and the measures to promote them. Finland’s goal is to become the European leader in the hydrogen economy in the entire value chain. Finland has the capacity to produce at least ten per cent of the EU’s emissions-free hydrogen in 2030.

27.1.2026 | Finland and China signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on energy cooperation in Beijing on 27 January 2026. The areas of cooperation focus in particular on clean energy, smart energy systems and energy innovation.

15.11.2024 | Prime Minister Petteri Orpo has launched the Room for Growth project to come up with ideas for new ways to boost economic growth. As part of the project, a discussion event will be held on Tuesday 19 November at 15.00–16.30 at Aalto University. The event will be streamed live and released as a recording on the government video service.

13.11.2025 | The Finnish Government submitted a communication to Parliament on 13 November 2025 regarding the European Commission’s proposal for a Regulation on the Connecting Europe Facility for the period 2028–2034. The Government welcomes the proposal and emphasises that funding should be more strongly directed towards strengthening defence and security, among other sectors. 

30.10.2024 | Finland and Saudi Arabia have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on energy. It aims to enhance technical and economic cooperation between the two countries in the energy sector and promote the access of Finnish companies to the Saudi Arabian market.

11.6.2021 | Finland will participate in creating a European value chain for the hydrogen economy (hydrogen IPCEI) and will launch a call for applications on related projects for companies. Companies will have until 4 July to present to Business Finland their projects, which are linked to European networks and which will speed up the production of clean hydrogen and the development of new uses for hydrogen.

28.6.2024 | On 24 June, the Ministerial Committee on Economic Policy decided that the Ministry of Finance would continue preparing a tax subsidy for large industrial investments that promote the clean transition. This tax subsidy would accelerate investments in the green transition.

18.12.2024 | The Ministry for Foreign Affairs is continuing to strengthen the network of Finnish missions abroad by opening a third Consulate General in the United States. The new Consulate General will be located in Houston, Texas.

11.6.2021 | The EU Ministers responsible for energy issues will convene in Luxembourg on 11 June 2021. The ministers aim to adopt a general approach on the proposed revision of the regulation on cross-border energy infrastructure (so-called TEN-E regulation), to discuss the hydrogen strategy published by the European Commission in July 2020 and to adopt conclusions on the renovations of buildings in Europe. 21.1.2022 | The EU’s environment and energy ministers will convene in informal meetings in Amiens, France on 20–22 January 2022. Emma Kari, Minister of the Environment and Climate Change, and Jukka Ihanus, State Secretary to Minister of Economic Affairs Mika Lintilä, will represent Finland in the meetings hosted by France.

30.10.2024 | By summer 2023, only three years had passed since the publication of the sectoral low-carbon roadmaps in 2020. A provision in Petteri Orpo’s government program from June 2023 mandated the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment and various sectors to revisit the roadmaps in light of the evolving operating environment. With this mandate, the update process began in autumn 2023. By autumn 2024, all 14 participating sectors had completed their updates.

17.12.2020 | Finland has joined the European Clean Hydrogen Alliance. The objective is to accelerate the industrial transformation towards the production and use of clean hydrogen as well as the development of new uses for hydrogen. This will contribute to Finland’s efforts to achieve its goal of carbon neutrality by 2035.
