23.4.2026 | Russia is waging a war of aggression in Ukraine for the fifth year and has not demonstrated a genuine willingness to negotiate for a lasting peace. Russia’s ruthless strikes on civilian targets highlight the need to tighten sanctions. With its 20th sanctions package, the European Union continues to increase pressure on Russia to weaken the country’s ability to pursue its war of aggression against Ukraine.

25.3.2026 | A study describing the alternatives and costs of nuclear energy promotion as well as its effects on the electricity market has been published. The report commissioned by the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment and produced by AFRY Management Consulting Oy was submitted to Minister of Climate and the Environment Sari Multala on 25 March 2026.

23.4.2025 | Prime Minister Petteri Orpo’s Government has agreed on the General Government Fiscal Plan for 2026–2029. The decisions focus on reinforcing the conditions for economic growth and enhancing the security of Finland and the Finnish people. At the same time, the Government will ensure that public finances are sustainable. The growth package will be financed responsibly through measures to increase general government revenue and reduce expenditure.

3.3.2026 | Finland’s development cooperation has strengthened the sustainable use of forests and water, improved access to clean energy, and supported disaster risk management in several partner countries, according to a new independent evaluation. The evaluation assessed results in the environment and natural resources sectors from 2010 to 2024, as well as opportunities for private-sector collaboration.

16.4.2026 | Finland has joined the Pax Silica initiative that aims to secure supply chains for semiconductors, critical minerals and artificial intelligence infrastructure. The declaration was signed on behalf of Finland by Minister of Economic Affairs Sakari Puisto in Washington on 16 April 2026.

9.10.2024 | On 9 October 2024, the Ministerial Committee on Economic Policy discussed and supported the new outlines for the ownership policy concerning Metsähallitus for 2024–2027. Besides the reconciliation of different needs, new objectives have also been included. Among the topics concerned are the economic benefit from the operations of Metsähallitus to the State and promotion of biodiversity and renewable energy.

16.4.2026 | The Government appointed a new Board of Directors for the Geological Survey of Finland (GTK) on 16 April 2026. Its term of office will last three years. Board Professional Joni Lukkaroinen will begin as Chair of the Board while Eeva Vahtera, Senior Ministerial Adviser at the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment, will serve as Vice-Chair.

24.3.2026 | Finland has joined the US-led Foundational Infrastructure for Responsible Use of Small Modular Reactor Technology (FIRST) programme as a contributing partner. Led by the State Department’s Bureau of Arms Control and Nonproliferation (ACN), FIRST harnesses the power of the nuclear industry to expedite responsible nuclear reactor deployment worldwide.

4.9.2025 | On 4 September, the Finnish Minister of Climate and the Environment Sari Multala and the Norwegian State Secretary Astrid Bergmål signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to facilitate cross-border transport of CO2 for permanent storage in Norway.

13.8.2025 | Technology-related issues have become central to foreign and security policy as never before, and technologies have a growing importance as instruments for geopolitical and economic competition. 18.9.2025 | At its meeting on 16 September, Prime Minister Petteri Orpo lead the Research and Innovation Council in discussions on the implementation of national policies for the use of R&D funding. The Research and Innovation Council was briefed by the Research Council of Finland and Business Finland as well as two organisations that are implementing significant national R&D projects.
