15.1.2026 | Veikkaus Oy’s monopoly on running gambling games will end. Under the new Gambling Act, the running of betting games, online slot and casino games, and online money bingo will be opened to competition under a licensing system. In its session on 15 January, the Government proposed that the President of the Republic approve the Gambling Act on 16 January. Most provisions of the new act will enter into force on 1 July 2027.

8.2.2022 | The Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment requests comments on Posiva Oy’s application for an operating licence that the company submitted to the Government on 30 December 2021 for an encapsulation plant and a disposal facility for spent nuclear fuel. The encapsulation plant is located above ground and an underground repository of the disposal facility is located in the bedrock at a depth of approximately 400–430 metres in Olkiluoto, Eurajoki.

8.8.2024 | The Ministry of Finance’s draft budget for 2025 implements the Government’s policies to strengthen general government finances. The draft budget totals EUR 88.1 billion and shows a deficit of EUR 12.2 billion.

26.6.2020 | The Ministry of Transport and Communications has appointed a working group to assist in further preparation of the temporary government grant intended to support journalism. The members of the working group will represent the media sector and experts in the field. The term of the group will be from 1 July 2020 to 31 December 2020.

At the moment, there appears to be a greater spirit of community among people, people seek more information and they appear to trust the authorities more than last year.

11.10.2021 | In a joint article published in several European newspapers on 11 October 2021, the ministers of 10 EU Member States write that nuclear power is part of the solution to reduce emissions and to strengthen Europe’s self-sufficiency in energy. According to the ministers, nuclear power must be included in the taxonomy for sustainable finance, which the European Commission is currently preparing.
