Primarily, the new act aims to ensure that the use of nuclear energy is in line with the overall good of society, that the operations are safe and that nuclear waste generated in Finland is handled properly.

  4. 29.8.2024 | On 29 August 2024, the Government appointed a new Board for the National Nuclear Waste Management Fund for the term of 1 September 2024–31 August 2027. The chair of the new Board will be Chief Risk Officer Jarkko Heikkilä from the Elo Mutual Pension Insurance Company.

The report assesses the environmental effects of a potential extension to the service life of Olkiluoto 1 and Olkiluoto 2 nuclear power plant units as well as an increase to their thermal power.

  9. 14.5.2021 | On 14 May 2021, Teollisuuden Voima Oyj submitted an environmental impact assessment report concerning its project on the final disposal of very low-level nuclear waste in the Olkiluoto nuclear power plant area to the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment.   14. 14.8.2020 | On 14 August 2020, Teollisuuden voima Plc submitted an environmental impact assessment programme (EIA programme) on the final disposal of very low-level nuclear waste in the Olkiluoto nuclear power plant area in Eurajoki to the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment. The alternatives are constructing a new near-surface disposal facility or expanding the deep geological repository currently in use.

  16. 8.2.2022 | The Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment requests comments on Posiva Oy’s application for an operating licence that the company submitted to the Government on 30 December 2021 for an encapsulation plant and a disposal facility for spent nuclear fuel. The encapsulation plant is located above ground and an underground repository of the disposal facility is located in the bedrock at a depth of approximately 400–430 metres in Olkiluoto, Eurajoki.

  17. 1.2.2022 | Finland and Sweden have sent a letter to Mairead McGuinness, EU Commissioner for financial services, financial stability and the Capital Markets Union, in which they express their concerns about the proposed technical screening criteria for nuclear power in the draft complementary delegated act of the EU Taxonomy Regulation.   18. 30.12.2021 | On 30 December 2021, Posiva Oy submitted to the Government an operating licence application referred to in the Nuclear Energy Act for an encapsulation plant and a disposal facility for spent nuclear fuel. The facility is currently under construction in Olkiluoto, Eurajoki. Posiva is applying for an operating licence for a period from March 2024 to the end of 2070.

  20. 27.11.2020 | On 13 August 2020, Fortum submitted an environmental impact assessment (EIA) programme to the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment. It started a procedure, which will assess the environmental impact of continuing, or alternatively closing, the operation of the Loviisa nuclear power plant as well as the impact of the options for the final disposal facility of low and intermediate-level waste.
