21.12.2022 | The Ministry of Social Affairs and Health has published a guide on how to apply the Decree on the Rights of Access to Client Data in Healthcare and Social Welfare.

17.11.2022 | The Government proposes that a new act be enacted on patient ombudspersons and social services ombudspersons. The act would lay down provisions on the organisation of the activities of patient ombudspersons and social services ombudspersons and their independence, qualifications and duties. The act would also include provisions on the processing of personal data. 

14.11.2022 | The Ministry of Social Affairs and Health, together with the Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare, will organise an information session on the content of the Decree on the Rights of Access to Client Data in Healthcare and Social Welfare and the related application guide on 19 December 2022 at 13.00–15.00.

1.6.2021 | The Ministry of Social Affairs and Health is continuing to prepare legislation on the self-determination of clients and patients. A roadmap extending beyond the term of the current Government will also be drawn up to strengthen client and patient participation and rights, and a broad-based monitoring group will be appointed to support this work.

12.6.2025 | The legislation aims to ensure the continuity of society’s critical functions during industrial action if the parties cannot by negotiation reach an agreement on the provision of essential work during the action. The Government proposes that the President of the Republic approve the legislative amendments on 13 June 2025. The amendments would come into force on 16 June 2025.

20.12.2022 | From 1 January 2023 onwards, the wellbeing services counties must provide necessary non-urgent healthcare services for undocumented persons and persons whose status resembles that of an undocumented person.

15.8.2024 | On Thursday 15 August, the Government appointed Anna Cantell-Forsbom to serve as Director General of the Department for Clients and Services in Healthcare and Social Welfare at the Ministry of Social Affairs and Health. The appointment is for a fixed term between 1 September 2024 and 31 August 2029.

28.12.2023 | The aim is to accelerate and streamline the administration of vaccines and to alleviate the shortage of healthcare personnel. The amendments that are being circulated for comments would allow dentists, senior pharmacists, pharmacists, practical nurses and biomedical laboratory scientists to administer vaccines. The amendments would also make it easier to organise vaccination at pharmacies’ health service points.

20.12.2022 | The President of the Republic has approved the amendments to the Abortion Act. In future, a pregnancy may be terminated solely based on the pregnant woman’s request until the end of the twelfth week of pregnancy. In the 1970 Act, an opinion by two doctors was required in most cases for the termination of pregnancy, and grounds had to be presented.

2.5.2019 | Content about choosing a health centre, hospital and other health services, published on the Choosehealthcare.fi website, will be moved to the Suomi.fi Web Service. From now on, the Choosehealthcare.fi site will focus on giving guidance on the international aspects of healthcare.

20.3.2020 | The Ministry of Social Affairs and Health has issued a guidance note to all municipalities, and for onward distribution to municipal units and to private service providers within each municipality, on specialised medical care, primary health care, services to older people, child welfare and ensuring the handling of social assistance under emergency conditions.

15.2.2023 | The programme for ensuring the sufficiency and availability of healthcare and social welfare personnel, which was launched by Minister Krista Kiuru, will end as the parliamentary term draws to a close. The aim of the programme has been to find solutions to meet the labour needs of the healthcare and social welfare sector now and in the coming years.

24.11.2022 | On Thursday 24 November, the Government appointed Anna Cantell-Forsbom as Director General of the Department for Clients and Services in Healthcare and Social Welfare at the Ministry of Social Affairs and Health. She will take up her duties on 1 December 2022. The appointment is for a fixed term until 31 May 2024. During this time, she will be deputising for Satu Koskela as Director General.
